Within the most recent report on migration by the Institute of Public Policy Research, a UK think tank, which is trying to count as many British expats worldwide as possible in a project running through 2006 has revealed that Malawi is 5th ranked in Africa with most British residents which I find quite shocking, unanticipated, and remarkable to say. Here is the table in order of reference:
South Africa (212,000),
Kenya (29,000) ,
Nigeria (16,000) ,
Egypt (14,000) ,
Malawi (7, 400)
Of course I am very surprised because as much as I might speculate their justification and reasons behind emigrating to the other four top countries in Africa I might not confidently say why they have concentrated on Malawi ,ranked 166th of the 177 countries of the world (HDI Report, 2006). What amazes me more is that these British (imperialists) emigrate for a better quality of life, better weather and a feeling that the UK is too expensive.
Still,it should be undisputed that while our neighbours accommodates Zambia(5,800), Tanzania (5,500) Mozambique (very few) including Zimbabwe (6,100), Malawi must reflect certain hidden collective human values that some digs within our society have pathetically failed to identify hence the nasty noise and mourning from the other side of migrated Malawians and cant appreciate a bit of their own country. This is not an implication of zero emigration of Malawians, nonetheless, I would like to see proud Malawians world-over who should be able to fly their national flag other than pretending the American / British national anthems as a knowledge of birth-right.This in true sense has more than one advantage and effect over brothers and sisters back at home who wish to emmigrate as well.
It is high time I believe for many more young Malawians with no hope of realising their dreams back home to shut-up on negative comments about life of the few previleged migrated Malawians and start feeding on the truth about life in the western world to propell themselves to the flight of atleast a hopeful life. You shall die guessing what life is really like on the other side unless you think again and try your own path of destiny.Emmigrating to the UK or USA doesnt mean you have to be special or about coming from a rich clan, it simply takes a certain kind of previlege that you should individually nurture.Wake-up Malawi and think emmigrating tidzatenge what belonged to us.......
