I have a qustion though, why is it that the moon didnt show up when expected ? And we had to have our holiday on tuesday of all the days, next time have a fixed time table and make your holidays on mondays or fridays.

That is a very good question. Well the Moon was born on Sunday at 7:14 am which means Eid was supposed to be on Monday, and the sighting time was between 18.17 and 18.40 that means by this time the Moon was 11:00hrs old. it is unlikely that the Moon can been seen when it is 11:00hrs old at least if it was 20:00hrs old we could have seen it.

There is a tradition of the Prothet which says that 'break the fast if you have seen the Moon with your owm eyes. otherwise if you can be told by some-one who is pious'! so that was the reason for the hesitation.

Aren't there any pious astronomers out there then? Something as simple as predicting a lunar phase should be a piece of cake this day and age. Is there any reason why eid isn't worked out that way?

Of course they can't be correct about everything. If you're want to show of anything, show me a profession where the same doesn't apply. That said, we're not talking about high-end science here. Predicting phases of the moon is as basic as astrophysics gets. It's literally been done for millenia now.
