I came across this on the BBC website. Something about the malawian government planning to get hawkers off the streets to covered flea markets. I think this is a very good Idea. The situation with hawkers in many african cities has gotten out of control. I can remember how it used to be in the 90's as a teenage girl wearing shorts, walking up and down the streets of Blantyre was a torture. One used to get all sorts of comments from them. They dont respect Women at all. Thieves hide amongst them. How many times have we heard someone being robbed and the thief disappears without any of them noticing athing. They make the streets dirty and unsafe. I say get them of the streets.
Getting the hawkers off the street is one way of keeping the streets safer. It would also be agood Idea if police officers are constantly present on the streets. This will make tourist and women feel safer. Malawi needs to clean up its streets. Its a pity to see that such a beautiful country doesnt attract a lot of tourist.
Now that the rest of the world is going to be focused on Germany World cup football. Knowing that the next World Cup finals will be held in South Africa a lot of focus will then shift to southern Africa. Malawi can use this to its advantange and try to sell itself to the rest of the world.
I didnt know the south African bid went though ..Im glad !
By the way, I think that the vendor issue is a social one, but also economically , no govt in the world supports street hawkers.... they make sure they allow some licensed ones to sell, but people just cant set up shop anywhere. It also leads to unhiegynic practices (where are the public toilets? and sinks to wash hands ?) , items you buy from them may be laced in feces...and not just food items... its a real problem .... but the old regime did encourage urbanisation (movement from rural areas to cities) b/c they were promoting 'business' - but what do those vendors really own..there products are givento them by Mr. Patel at the wholesalers and he makes the profit...so its not viable for Malawian vendors to do so...pick another trade... I think they need to go too.
