I think so. Kamuzu tried his best to convince Malawians that "chuma chili mnthaka" and as a country we never experienced food shortage for a longer part of his reign. We had a youth week in those days where everybody worked hard to construct roads, schools, bridges, etc so that we lived in a better environment. Somebody came in by the name of Bakuli and convinced the masses that what they were doing was "thangata". He instilled laziness in Malawians. People were thinking of getting everything from the govt (achair).

Now Bingu is saying no, as malawians we have to work hard in our gardens and in any economic activity. So if you look at it, you will see that is what Kamuzu advocated. There is more than what the eyes can see on the crop inspection tours. Realising that more damage has been done by Bakuli on the self help spirit, Bingu had to strategise on how to bring it back. One way is the crop inspection tours. Infact if you follow closely Bingu's leadership, you will see that he started instilling some working spirit by telling the UDF women dancers, that the time is over for such kind of activities. Everybody should get involved in some economic activities. No more K50 notes in political rallies. He knew pretty well that stopping K50 notes was not enough to change the minds of Malawians. A more vigilant way was required. He stopped starter packs, not that it was a bad idea but he wanted to eliminate from the mind of people "ZAULERE" mentality. Instead he brought in subsidy, which was exactly what Kamuzu did throughout his reign. I may go on and on.

So to to me Bingu is in Ngwazi's shoes. After all he said it himself during ground breaking ceremony of the parliament building in Lilongwe.

Looking at him from close range he wishes to put on the biggest kamuzu shoe of which even kamuzu never wore.I hope we will not see another mwanza accident or will it be chiweta this time.

I think he is trying to be in Ngwazi's socks!! He may have good intentions for the country but his flagrant disregard of the constitution is not a good sign of his wit. Either he is big-headed and does not see the point in consulting his advisors or he is overwhelmed by the sheer immensity of the office of presidency. Ngwazi had the brains and not hang-overs!!

Ngwazi never made any pledges at public rallies because he was avoiding unrealistic expectations from the people. Bingu tends to forget that sometimes.

Do "life presidents" have to do that? (I mean, who are they accountable to?) If they did where would they get the time to glorifify themselves (you know, drag school kids out of class to applaud the presidential motorcade, stuff like that).

Have a big picture and you will see what his vision is. Apart from dictatorship Ngwazi had other things worthy admiring. Crop inspection is good and encourages farmers. Hangovers are better than womanising and stealing. More fire Bingu.
