The picture for some movies fills up the screen. With others, the picture only occupies a narrow band across the middle of it, with the top and bottom (i.e. the rest of the screen) blacked out. Does anyone know why?
Because some pictures are shot in "wide-screen". Which is typically 16:9 aspect ration. And others are shot in 4:3. The widescreen ones are the ones with the black bars. You get a more panoramic view of the picture and it usually includes things that would typically be cut out from the 4:3 - the other one.
Sometimes films can be shot in either and mastered in the other. So you can have a film shot in 16:9 but "compressed" to 4:3 or nice versa. Because of the popularity of very large screens and dvds widescreen versions of films (which is really how films are typically shot because that is the "cinema" aspect ratio) have become almost the stable. If your TV is a widescreen one then you'll get the "real" feel of how the film would show in the cinema. Otherwise you'll notice that the figures seem "longer" diagonally.
TV movies, news, or any other thing meant for TV are still one 4:3.

I seem to be reading here a lot about others trying to discredit others according to their spelling or grammatical errors. All I can say is there are a lot of people here on this forum who do make errors. I being one of them. I have come to realize that the price one pays for speaking alot of languages is you lose your natural ability to spell. One language starts to dorminate the others. This is not just my problem but I know a lot of native English speakers who have majored in English, Spanish, French, German, African, Latein american literature and linguistics. They also experience problems with simple spelling mistakes in their native language. I have come to realize that spelling mistakes or grammatical errors can not determine the level of ones intelligence. What determines the level of ones intelligence is the contents.

I have also realised that these two gentlemen called Ayatollah and Game take themeselves as the most intellectual on this forum. Guys I can tell you that you are too boring. We are all hiding here in our pseudos and should not take other people as stupid because they mis-typed. If you feel that you know english better than everybody then go and seek a job in one of the nursery schools in Malawi. We dont have chiefs here.
