Whats wrong with some men nowadays. If he was that desperate, couldnt he have masturbated.
Locking him up even for as long as 14yrs want help. The problem is in his head, he will come out and do it again. Besides malawian prisons are full it will just cost the tax payers alot of money. The best solution will be to castrate him. I dont care what the NGOs will say about abuse of human rights. This case is an exception. Castrating him will ensure that he will never do it again. It will always remind him of the consequences of doing something like this to a baby. It will also teach other men a lesson.

Although it might sond like the logical thing to do, I mean the castration - and I know somewhere in my heart of hearts I agree - it is a knee-jerk reaction to a horrble crime however.
You see as horrible as it is, it is an illness or at least a mental disorder and should be treated as such, not exactly a criminal disorder per se.
And like Nali said it is in his head. Well, what isn't? The punishment of this man should not be and can not be used as a deterent, it just won't work. And the fact that you said "nowadays" denotes that it either is a new phenomenon (it ain't) or it is on the increase. It isn't.
Sadly, looking at problem in terms of cost-efficiency is the wrong way out. The entire world - I think only Canada and Scandinavia have started this - should be doing the treatment way than the punishment one. I mean, where would the catholic chuch be if they castrated all those priests. And I can assure you there are millons of them out there raping boys.
I dont think the malawian government can afford psychologist if they dont even have enough district attorneys.
When I read this story i felt terrible. I remembered a topic that was here with pictures of the situation of the prisons in Malawi. I felt sorry for the prisoners living in those conditions then but when i read this it has changed my way of thinking. I pictured this guy as one of those prisoners and how good I felt that he is going to be living in those awful conditions. The only fear i have is, if he is convicted and gets the maximum sentence he will be out in a couple of years, because of overcrowding in the prisons. He will do it again to another baby or another child.
We are living in a world where criminals seems to also have rights. But I think that the victims and would be victims rights should be put first. Crime like this should be severely punished. This type of crime should be treated like murder. There is no hope of rehabilitation in this case. I know we cant solve problems by using the same methods used to create the problem. If this would have been my baby i would have taken the law into my own hands and cut it (castrate him).

Of course criminals have right. They should. And technically there really is no such thing as victims rights when punishment of a criminal is concerned. Since of course what we call "victims rights" is another word for revenge. Giving the victim a say in the punishment of a criminal. I don't think i even have to explain the consequence of going that route.
As horrible as the crime is. And yes it is inexcusable as it is horrible. It is the state that has and should have the only say in giving out punishment. Not the victim.
