Unlike in the old days, most Malawians go to UK or USA not necessarily to get better or further education but to get their shot at other opportunities that these countries have to offer just like it is going to RSA. And in most cases these people have an idea what types of jobs they will be doing once they reach "the land of opportunities". The most important thing is they are able to support themselves and their families back home. You Game and let alone Ngumuya, should know what I am talking about because you are also the product of this same process whereby at one point in time you had to take odd jobs inorder to make ends meet and perhaps even pay for your fees. Talking about Ngumuya, you probably have never seen a hypocrite like him in your life, ask anybody who knows him what I am talking about. I could elaborate but I am not going to do it. Just know that his job up to now envolves looking after a disabled person. He has lived in the USA for about 10 years and alll he has is Bachelors degree. And it was kind of stupid of him to go in public and start talking about a bachelors degree when he knows very well that this degree almost boils down to a high school certificate because the majority has it and it does not guarantee you anything in the competetive job market.
hey what i can say is everybody knows that the majority of people in usa or america do odd jobs but the reall deal is that they are doing better than those of you who are back home and for ngumuya to say that on tv i dont think he was wrong but he could have said it better like even though he has a degree he still do the odd jobs his degree doesnt mean a thing in the strange land the oportunities are first given to those that own the land if you know what i mean and for him rather than just not to have a job to make ends meet he does odd jobs too just like those who are not going to school and actually he does the same shift with my cousin, the other thing is to say the truth if you can imagine all these people that are now in the usa or uk imagine if they were all here in malawi what would they have been doing?if right now the majority of people who went to school and have degrees dont have jobs that are well paying .im sure its better to be in usa/uk and do odd jobs than to be thieves in your own country,if people can afford to have navigators, hummers ,escalades, mecs, bimas, with the odd jobs then they are better off than those who went to school and are working hard but they dont have good cars, and some of them dont even have one they are still walking to and from and they will retire without having one.
lets face it ,these people are working hard whereever they are to earn what they have and lets give credit where its due malawians are hard working people and they are able to help relatives to live comfortable lives. so i see it as a dumb idea for him to be saying whatever he is saying on tv because he works odd jobs too and it doesnt matter in these countries cause its not like home where you cant afford a living doing odd jobs. in these counties these people live large maybe we can compare it to the life of a general manager of some bank or a big company.
chao or whoever you are, its really sad that there is people like you who live hand and mouth and still think you are doing better than people in Malawi. maybe you are doing better than you parents in malawi, but people like us who always go to malawi knows kuti they are people who are doing way way better than some of you folks in South Bend.
Nandau i dont live in southbend i now live in malawi but i have lived in the USA and i know what it means i know what this guy is talking about you are talking about the minority that are doing better but lets talk about the majority you know for sure that the majority of people in malawi are suffering while the majority of those that are in USA and UK are not suffering like those in malawi even though they work odd jobs they are waaaaaaaaaaaay much better than you are nandau and for your imformation my parents live a comfortable life it just shows how dumb you are and that you dont even know what you are talking about im talking through i have been there and have done that, thas why you people you dont progress in life because i dont see anything bad with doing odd jobs because even the Americans or the real british people work the odd jobs and they earn a living and a goodlife with the same jobs.
c'mon guys, there is no need to make this personal in anyway. Inoder to have a sensible discussion about this issue, we must have an accurate idea of the situation these people are in. We must refrain from type-casting and general statesments that are not supported with facts. I think there have been some interesting points that have been brought up in the latter postings by various members. I really cannot give a pre-developed argument about the UK, because I have never lived there. I can, however, talk about the actual happenings in the US.
The truth is; As economies grow, the labor market are becoming more and more globally competitive ie outsourcing. As most of you know, the two main things employers take into account when looking at applications is education and experience. Most Malawians who enter the job market at entry-level, lacking one or both, are often given the wage jobs. This is where we find people working as nurses, cleaners, in construction etc.
These jobs may be regarded by some folk as undesirable considering they often involve working in unpleasant conditions with low pay. The pay is low, relative to the sallaried jobs that are offered in positions higher up. But can still be compared with the monthly sallary of an office executive in Malawi-fact. The other bright side is; there is no way to go but upwards or side ways. Positions are hierarchal, and with time comes experience. Thus, "the land of opportunities", where one can advance himself no matter where he starts.
A strong educational background can go a long way, and empowers one with the kind of knowledege and awareness that can provide all sorts of opportunities. However, the bachelors degree does not gaurantee you a good job in your field, or at all for that matter. As someone suggested earlier, there are too many people with bachelors degrees, almost making them obsolote. Hence, the demand for post-graduate degrees has increased. Which means even more years in school.
As for the Malawians in South Bend, what you see in those pictures is alot more complicated than just a bunch of people who aren't doing anything for themselves. For the most part, Allan is wrong. There is a large population of Malawians living in Indiana, and it would be inacurate to say all of them are just partying or aren't doing anything for themselves. It just so happens that the pictures on this site are taken at parties. And that should be the main thing people should take into consideration before anything else.
Dust is yourself! It doesn’t matter where you are and how you do it – bottom line is survival! Ena zikuwalephera ku ma States ndi UK konko mpaka kumenya u-turn ena zikuwayendera, ena pa Malawi pomwepo akusimba lokoma ena akulirapo!
