DR. KAMUZU BANDA AND FLY WHISK
Permalink Closed

Dr Banda's Fly whisk was the best that could suit him.It had alot of stories when he was alive such as juju,it could silence the multitude at a political rally,it could tell him about danger. You can name the rest.My question is this;where did he get it from. How could Dr Banda believe in such superstition. Can we not take that fly whisk and put it in the museum because some of us would like to have a close look at it.

Wasn't it just a symbol of power? One ruler for the nation, thefore only one person could carry it? Other society uses Tiara's, rings, stools....

Superstition and religion.I thought superstition is african science which you should have been supporting. It used to be our culture before the missioneries and I think thus why Dr.Banda thought of using these natural beliefs.Remember some NEC members refused to accept him as a Malawian. The question is where did he get the flt whisk, because when landing he flashed it.Did he get it in UK or in Kumasi Ghana.

Superstition is superstition, whether African or Western. All is bollocks if you ask me. Any apparent event that has no relation to reality. And no, superstition is not African science. Science is a very different thing. Infact science is the exact opposite.

Banda knew one thing at least. That Malawians were generally, by virtue of their ignorance, ready to believe anything. The fly-whisk came from a horses arse, or whatever animal that was. Originally it has aesthetic value only. Till the myth filtered out about some magical power it had. No it was an animals tail!

Can you enlighten me on Tiara's and stools

I was referring to the Golden Stool in Ghana, among the Ashanti people. As for tiara(or similar Head gear), I can name a few : the Baoule's of Cote d"ivoire, the Mossi of Burkina Fasso. Only the rulers got to wear/sit on the crown/stool. In some european countries like Roumania, they used to have a scepter (decorated with diamonds and other goodies mind you) that only the president was allowed to touch and carry. That was the symbol of his power. Up to this day correct me if I am wrong, Queen Elizabeth has one that only she gets to carry around.

NO NO NO not everyone believes in fantasy, Pope. Even if it is common in the west doesn't mean squat. There's a reason why it's called superstition. It is false.....

The old man went to the grave with his fly whisk, walking stick donning his favorite "chi bland chakuda" and his bob hat on the chest. If there is an after life they should be arguments btwn Botha,Machel and Banda right about now.

arguments on what? perhaps, as to who caused Machel's death during the plane crash belleved to have been masterminded by Botha and Banda?

forget, the guys were good masterminders, they didnt leave any trails! if two previous regimes (Botha's & Mandela's) of SA with the help of KGB could not unearth the truth. do you think Machel could do that in death?
