Miss Malawi has a heart for children

by Edyth Betha, 02 April 2004 - 14:28:46

The newly-crowned Miss Malawi, Florence Zeka, 23, says disadvantaged children are first on her list of priorities for the charity work she intends to do during her term of office.
“I’m planning to be very active in charity,” says Zeka. “I like children and there are people that are helping me choose charity organisations that I can work with. I would like to work with children, orphans as well as the handicapped.”
She says her heart also reaches out to many less privileged people in our society, including widows that have children but are failing to support them properly because of financial constraints.
“There are a lot of women out there whose husbands were breadwinners but they died, leaving their children’s future vague, I would like to work with such,” she adds.
But apart from children she also wants to work with the youth, especially in encouraging girls to attend school because “education is the key to success and success comes with hard work”.
Zeka, who is currently studying for her ACCA Diploma at the Malawi College of Accountancy (MCA) in Blantyre and wants to be a corporate banker, says she hopes her commitments as Miss Malawi will not affect her studies.
“I know it’s quite demanding but I just need to set my time properly and stick to that. If I organise my time properly I will not have problems balancing these two important sides of my life,” she says.
Asked whether she felt she deserved to win, Zeka, who beat 15 other contestants to be crowned queen, says a definite yes.
“I deserved to win. Everyone who participated deserved to win. All the girls were beautiful. The rest was up to the judges.
“I thank God that I won. There was tough competition, but the crowd loved what they saw (in me). And to think that most of those people in the crowd didn’t know me, still they loved me,” she says.
But the contest was not all smooth-sailing, at least if what she says is anything to go by.
“I’m a shy person and I was nervous on stage. I actually thought I would pull out at the final rehearsals. But with encouragement from family and friends, I made it,” she says.
Quizzed whether she thinks her height will not stand in her chances of winning in the Miss World contest, which the organisers said this year’s queen is definitely going to participate in, Zeka said it is not a model’s show where they want participants to be tall to qualify.
“I am comfortable with my height and I have beauty so I can compete at that level. I will try my level best to win. I hope the organisers start preparations now because it doesn’t help to wait until the last minute,” she says.
Zeka says she wants people in the country to change their perceptions towards beauty queens. She says she can only cope with the pressure of her work if people are willing to help her.
“People tend to think that contestants in beauty pageants are immoral and are out to mess around with other people’s husbands but that’s not the case.
“I’m very serious with my life. I’m working hard in my studies and I want to have a career, get married and live a proper life,” explains Zeka who like to do aerobics and reads a lot in her spare time.
But Zeka has a dream.
“I want to meet the President,” she says.

wow indeed, that Miss Malawi is looking fine. I heard that Malawi will participate in the next Miss World contest, if this is true then all the best to Miss Malawi. However, not to put her down or anything but I heard that she's pretty short and she might have a height disadvantage in the competetion. You all know how height is an important factor in these competetions.

I am all for Malawi going the extra mile to join in such stuff.  But I certainly hope that MW is doing exactly that -- going the extra mile.  Madona a chimalawi ndi okongola, but when it comes to international beauty pageants they always fall short because they have not been fully trained.  Other people take this stuff seriously and invest a lot of money in etiquette.  I wonder if MW is doing the same I certainly hope so.  They need to send her to SA or somewhere for poise training, communication, cat walking, etc.  If she can impress them in other ways, then her height might actually work to her advantage as people will remember: "the shorter girl with a gorgeous personality and style...etc".  However, the best of luck to the current queen.

Just my 2 cents...kudos

i possibly cannot believe that miss malawi wants to go on Miss world. Yes it is a good thing but what we should do is learn from other mistakes in the past i.e Elizabeth Pulu. Well what more can i say. Still keep up the confidence. Well done

What happened to Elizabeth Pullu, tell us the mistake so that we can advise the new miss to handle it with care.

I have been out of the loop for quite a while so I would be lying if I said anything.  But I do have questions, did Ms. Pulu go to the Miss World pageant?  How did she do?  And by the way, I am not trying to indulge in gossip, so only facts please -- I am dead serious.  If there is nothing good to say, then forget that I asked the questions.

...kudos
