Honestly i think it is time i just stopped followingMalawi politics all together because it gets crazier, wierder, and funnier by the minute. I sometimes feel we do not even practice politics in Malawi but rather bribery, appeasement, theft, extortion, and threats. I think i do not have to give examples because ,honestly, i do not think i have the space or time to go into that because it would surely take the whole day. One simply has to open the Malawi newspapers (if they can be called that) to see just how hilarious and pathetic malawi politics has become. You have members of parliament who have no inkling of an idea on what the word parliament means (not to add most cannot even spell the word 'parliament') let alone know what they are supposed to do there (of course the other problem is that Chichewa can not be spoken in the áugust house so many MPs would rather remain quiet than look like imbeciles). You have a president who is still fishing around for a clear-cut agenda (plus political allies) instead of ruling, and an opposition that is more bent on destroying the president and his chosen lietenants ( of course dancing to the tune of one man) rather than coming up with constructive criticism. Of course in the end the politicians get richer and the poor masses get poorer and Malawi continues to go to the dogs!!!!
Although I understand your frustration, it is the same everywhere. have you followed American politcs lately, you'll see it isn't much difference. In a lot of accounts, worse. They have more at stake and so the back-biting and bribery that goes with all politics is even more vicious.
The institutions of power that make up politics corrupts itself. Power corrupts like they say. It is impossible to find a politician anywhere in the world who has intergrity and honesty - Then you'll be an activist and not a politician. You can't be both.
Every one is worried at the speed malawi politics is losing track. At one time someone told me to check the word politics in the dictionary and I tried to compare. Now in malawi a party gets formed and it needs to gather support,it will start hunting for polititians, and these are not cheap as they call themselves, they will demand positins, nice cars, good coverage; that is security, media, and even secretaries. As abre has said power corrupts, anyone going into politics knows how to play the game. What remains to voters is just a chance to compete in voting for leaders after that go back and watch poverty biting. Our prayer should be ,we should be united to check these polititians.I do agree with your concern with our mps,but what can they do,you need to be very careful in how you contribute in the august house, don't over shine your party president, or you don't need to contribute out side the caucus agreeement.
An example is in Aford, the mps wanted to be so democratic and the result was they coudnt even respect the hierachy and the party is at mercy today.Malawi is on a process of adaptation and the result will be judged later.Dont worry about time.
