SOCIETY: Those hips, the breasts and my oh my!

Ample cleavage for women is all the rage these days. So is heavy hips, flat stomachs and others. And as for men, it’s all about having a sizable manhood. Some come by them naturally, but for those who don’t, they look for help.
Angels of mercy?
Different herbal products in town. Of late, there have been different adverts on herbal products touted as the answer to flat breasts, short manhood, stretch marks, small hips etc. The medicines come in different forms — capsules, syrups, gels, tablets and creams. You name it, you get it.
And people are using them, according to providers.
Jeffrey Kenzo of Kenzo Products Shop at Area 47 in Lilongwe says the products are becoming popular by day. In stock at the shop are slimming syrups and capsules, enlarger gel and pump, semen developer, breasts syrups and tablets, weight gain products and others. The most popular, according to Kenzo, is enlarger gel for the manhood.
“We get about 30 customers per day for this product. It is selling big time,” he says, adding the product is used by both youths and adults.
The product is pegged at K4,500 per dosage (two bottles). It is packed with instructions on how to use it. And for three weeks of use, you get satisfactory results, he claims.
“There are no side effects, none we have heard of so far. If anything, the only complaint we have received is that some people don’t feel they have reached the expected size after use so they come for more,” he says.
Most men who use the products do so to satisfy their female partners, says Kenzo. And for those who have a bit of money, they go for enlarger pump which costs K9,500.
“It’s a machine which men use to pump themselves. They do it daily for about a month. Once you achieve the required size you stop,” he says, adding the transformation is permanent with both products.
And women have not been left out of this madness. Some are going for products to boost their breasts. Some of them find that their breasts have deflated from breast-feeding and their self-esteem suffers. They want to look better in clothes.
For others, especially younger women, it could be peer pressure. They want perfect bodies. Yet others do it to please a male figure in their lives.
And so, for three weeks, they use gels or take capsules and the breasts grow to a right size and shape, says Kenzo.
That is just another group of women. And some are going to the extreme. They are using virginity soaps on their private parts. And they are in majority.
“The soap is used daily when bathing, for about three weeks. Some women have come back to say they are happy, even their partners are excited with the transformation,” says one provider who only identifies himself as Paul.
The soap costs K3,000 but there is always a discount, he says.
And if you see some girls that suddenly develop heavy hips, don’t be surprised. It could be the work of hip boosters.
Two students at the Malawi College of Accountancy (MCA) in Blantyre have benefited from this product. Both, who opt for anonymity, say they took the product because they wanted to feel accepted and wanted.
“I used to have an average body, but when I saw the way my boyfriend secretly admired my friends who had big hips, I made the choice to be like them. I felt I could keep him that way because he would be able to appreciate me,” says the lady who turns 23 next month and is currently studying towards ACCA qualification.
Her colleague explains that since the advent of the American term ‘bootylicious’, to mean girls with sexy and attractive bodies, girls have tended to believe that having big hips is the in-thing.
“Everybody wants to look like Beyonce [Knowles] or J-Lo [Jeniffer Lopez] because we are made to believe that is the way that one has to be if you want to look attractive,” she says.
But does she feel satisfied now that she is curvy?
“I don’t think satisfied will be the right word to use, but appreciated. When I walk around town, at least my boyfriend does not have to keep looking at other women.
“I now feel secure because I know my man will not leave me for another woman,” she says.
Paul says girls either take tablets or use gel to increase the hip size. He says the instructions on the use of the products are clear and one can’t go wrong.
But there have been stories where some girls had one hip growing bigger than the other.
“The issue of having one hip size growing bigger than the other doesn’t arise. You spread the gel on your palms and apply an equal amount to both sides. You can’t go wrong that way. The medicines also tone your skin, on the bums,” he says.
As for men, Paul says, they mostly rush for products to enlarge their manhood and increase sperm production.
But perhaps, worth noting is the manner in which the business is conducted. It is discreet, according to Paul, and nobody wants to be seen to be using such products.
“We deliver by order and clients don’t want us to know their names. You can be surprised that notable people, like ministers, use the products. Sometimes we are asked to drop wrapped parcels at different offices.
“It can be expensive for us to deliver the orders to places that are far so we have to weigh the profit before we deliver,” he says.
And like Kenzo, he says there are no side-effects.
But is it desperation that people are using such products. Do they really work? Does it make sense for one to go for them?
Dr. Charles Chilimampunga, a sociologist at Chancellor College, says people want to feel complete and adequate and so these products are taking advantage of that fact.
“Personally, I don’t think they work but still people feel confident to use them,” he says.
And adds: “There is some sort of pressure to look like people who are attractive, to feel accepted. But personally, I think it’s not good to use such products. People should be able to feel adequate and not go for unnatural ways to improve their outlook,” he says, adding the potential consequences of someone not seeing the results working can be frustrating.
Medical experts have been mum on the issue. Dr Leonardo Vigna of Mwaiwathu Private Hospital in Blantyre says it is difficult to assess the medicine unless he sees and investigates them.
Dr Joyce Munthali, a gynaecologist, says she hasn’t seen the medicines so she wouldn’t be able to assess them.
And so the story goes.

Ladies and gents, do u think it's a sign of development in malawians' perception of beauty or it's just trying to imitate celebrities and the fashion  of Western Countries. Are all these practices safe?

Moat of these things might have long term effects. The only problem is that we can never know until later, hopefully it won't be too late.

Thanks to MTV and other sources, western; most especially american decadence is quickly taking advantage of stupidity and ignorance in MW and Africa. This really isn't a new phenomenon however. But I must stress that there is no cure for vanity coupled with ignorance and idiocy.

There is no magic pill to make one look like anyone or anything. To say the truth these "cures" are probably poisonous.

The real victims are those fools who believe it. Those who; out of vanity and self-loathing, want to "fit in". Even though they don't know what "in" they are attempting to fit.

I mean are Beyonce or J-lo really that beautiful. If you ask me they really are quite revolting. And so is anyone trying to look like them.

And to the men. Size really doesn't matter. Really....

But guys think about those girls amene amuna sayang'ana ndi pang'ono pomwe I mean because  they are not 'pretty'. (don't get me on the meaning of pretty, apply whatever u think are your standards of beauty). If these "unpretty" girls change their bodies  just to get attention, is it really bad? What else do you suggest for such ones?

It is just a testament to western consumerism and alienation. Have you ever watched an American "reality" series called "The Swan" where a bunch of "unpretty" women undergo some of the most apalling treatment and end up competing in a beauty contest.

The truth is if someone feels that they are unpretty and need "treatment" to "cure" them from ugliness, then the truth is the treatment they need is more psychological and less physical. The have some deep-seated mental issues that they need to sort out. Stuff to do with self-esteem and confidence that no amount of surgery can cure.

I know "the Swan" and as I watched it, I realised that most of the women had psychological problems caused by their outward appearances. If we forget about the psychological, and concentrate on the physical for a moment. Do you mean that being "unpretty" does not exist? Do you think that people "feel" ugly"?

Someone may have self-confidence, self-esteem but at the same time physically  unpretty.

I JUST HAVE TO WATCH A FEW MINUTES OF ANY FOX PROGRAMME TO REALISE THE DAMAGE CONSUMERISM CAN HAVE ON THE HUMAN BEING. HOW CAN ONE "FEEL" UGLY. UGLY IS A LOOK NOT A FEEL. YOU EITHER HAVE THE AESTHETIC QUALITY OF BEAUTY OR YOU DON'T. I KNOW THIS MW GIRL. GOD, SHE'S BEAUTIFUL. THE MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMAN I'VE EVER KNOWN IN MY LIFE ALL AROUND THE WORLD. BUT HER SELF CONFIDENCE IS BELOW ZERO. SHE HIDES BEHIND HER SO-CALLED "BORN-AGAIN" SINCE IT RELEASES HER FROM THE FACT THAT MEN CAN'T HELP BUT STARE AT HER. IT'S HER WAY OF RECONCILING WITH THAT FACT. AND THAT'S THE CASE WITH A LOT OF BEAUTIFUL WOMEN. THEY EVEN HAVE LESS SELF-CONFIDENCE THAN THE LESS THAN BEAUTIFUL ONES. ON THE OTHER HAND THE WOMEN WHO GO ON THE SWAN HAVE DEEP-ROOTED PSYCHOLOGICAL ISSUES. AND AS WITH EVERYTHING IN AMERICA, THEY LOOK FOR QUICK FIXES. TRYING STAVE OFF THE INEVITABLE DECAY OF THE BODY.
