How are you celebrating Malawi Independence Day this year?
I remember back in the days of Unity, Loyalty,Obedience and Discipline, people used to celebrate by going 'ku 6 July' - Kamuzu Stadium that is. By 6 in the morning the stands would be reaching full capacity. With almost everyone carrying 'food container' ya mpunga.
This was the day when Kayombe and ayufi ruled the day. The police were there but they did not seem to do much, well PMF did if you dared to go to the toilet.
I enjoyed the military displays and all the floats but the climax would be the international football match. I remember that Kamuzu almost always left at half time. What I can't remember though is whether his speech came before the match or at half time. Anyway, 6 July yabwino wherever you are.
I hate to be the one to rain on this nostalgia parade but I cannot even begin to register the hate that I have for Kamuzu Banda. I can tell those that only see the "good" side of him were not affected by the brutallity of his rule.
Forget that we didn't have a choice and had to attend the celebrations. And had to sing praises to him like he was some kind of god while he was whisked away in his Rolls to his palace.
Oh, and not to forget being harrased by some idiotic MYP moron for not showing enough enthusiasm.
I can understand the nostalgia. The mind, for some reason, edits out the bad bits. We were kids then anyway and it was a day out like no other. A bit like a football match.
No. To me the 6 July celebrations only brings bad profound feelings of disgust and anger.
Sometimes in life you have to forgive. If you keep on being mad at this guy or the whole era then you make them triumph.
Look at any body find one thing you like about them and multiply it by a hundred. I dond agree with what he did but its all gone now. Its all good that we lived to tell .
Forgive me but I don't subscibe to the psycho-babble of "whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger" If that was the case then emotional trauma won't exist.
For personal reason I cannot forgive Kamuzu and his cronies. It is a family matter which I won't go into just yet.
Being the cynic that I am I guess I see human nature for what it is not what it appears to be. So that stuff about multiplying people's good points is beyond me. It takes a greater man than myself. And you, sepu probably are.
