THERE'S THIS DEBATE IN THE UK MEDIA ABOUT BLACK AFRO-CARRIBEAN BOYS UNDER-PERFOMANCE IN SCHOOL. PART OF IT IS BLAMED ON US CULTURE ANS ABSENT FATHERS. THEY THINK THAT THESE BOYS SHOULD GO TO SEGREGATED SCHOOLS.
The issue is very complex as usual love. I have been a volunteer teacher, teaching those kinds of students and I would have to say that the trend does show that there is a correlation between race, lack of a positive father figure and under performance at school. The problem is that these kids need a special kind of environment in which to learn, an environment not provided by the public school system. In the USA it has been done and these boys thrive. Boys who were once diagnosed as having ADD or being dyslexic or just plain stupid end up getting the highest SAT scores. The issue is the word SEGREGATION. We always think of it in the negative, but in some cases it can be used positively. I say if it does help these students then they should be segregated and given the specialised environment they require to learn. At school a lot of these kids are into just flossing and playing the big boys in class and not actually concentrating. These kids want to learn but they succumb to peer pressure and assume that their peers expect them not to be NERDY. In addition a lot of these kids do not know anyone who has pursued higher education. So to them its not something they strive for, their goal is to finish thier compulsory education and get a job. They admire and aspire to be like people who have not been to school yet made billions. Like the Richard Bransons, the Bill Gates, the Puff Daddy's and the John Huntsman's or this world. They all believe that it could happen to them.
Damnit I've written too much...gotta go study will elaborate later.
Domestic instability, poor academic performance? That sounds sounds like the classic example of attributes inherent to the lower social & economic classes of ANY society. This is not the first time the UK has had to face these problems (ever heard of Oliver Twist?). To define them purely in terms of race is in my opinion, irresponsible and unacceptable, not to mention, unimaginative. Is (racial) segregation the best way to solve a matter of policy and economics that has come up because of (among other things) racial prejudice AND segregation? Maybe not. I'm curious though. How have (disadvantaged) white academic underperformers been dealt with in the past?
segregation has not worked in the past why would it work now. They should not concentrate on the boys performance in school, but they should concentrate on the homes and the poverty that they are going home to. Give their mom a decent earning wage. His grades will increase. Why can the girls overcome this and not the guys...this is not a raclia issue its a poverty issue. People fought hard , some died , so the intergration can occur, now u want that blood to be in vain...
This is my own opinon yeah, most people here don't appreciate education as much as we do back home (wether black or white) back home you only have one shot and you have to sweat to even get selected to college and if your parents can't send you to a private collge you are doomed for life.they even get paid to go to college, imagine if we had all that in malawi? All this about it only being black people who don't work hard is krap to me after all we are the minority(for now!)
I don't expect anyone to give a quick answer to these questions (unless you work for the UK Dpt of Education), but if you can, let me know. 1. How does the performance of blacks in predominantly black schools in the UK & elsewhere compare with national averages? 2. How about when other factors such as funding-per-student are taken into account? Is perfomance below or@/above par? If it is below par, is the case for segregation in schools still justifiable? 3. Do the lowest performing white schools have anything in common with the lowest performing black schools eg setting (urban?), funding & student backgrounds? 4. What has changed where schools have registered improvement/decline over the years? What about when you do an analysis based on the racial composition of the schools (ie black/white/asian, predominantly black/white/asian) 5. What simillarities are there btwn the highest performing students & schools? And based on the same analysis as above? Im convinced that the answers would (will) support my views.
