Tony Blair's Victory,Your reaction.
Permalink Closed

I was just reading the morning news as I normally do when I wake up, trying to keep abreast with the world’s current affairs, and I just came across the news that Tony Blair has managed to secure a third term victory in the UK. I haven’t really had the time to acquaint myself with all the pre-election developments and issues that unfolded prior to the elections hence I do not have a fair knowledge of the manifestos that were brought forth to the electorate during the campaigning period. One thing I know for a fact is that there has been issues about immigrants and asylum seekers, an issue that I became very interested in, knowing that this might directly or indirectly affect my fellow countrymen over there in the UK. So now that Blair has won the elections, what impact will this have on my fellow Malawians and immigrants in general over there in the UK? Is this the result that you were looking forward to my fellow countrymen who reside in the UK? And to the rest of the world, what effect will this have on the world in regards to issues like the Iraq war, North Korea, Zimbabwe and his front seat position in trying to help Africa rid of it’s woes? Your positive contributions on this topic are very welcome and greatly appreciated.

Labour's victory comes as no surprise to anyone following the election process in the UK. And I think it's going to be more of the same as before, but some say that Blair will be deposed sooner than later as a liability. We don't kknow yet.

As for the immigration issue, nothings changed. Every election year the Conservatives step up the rhetoric on it. It's been the case ever since. It's mostly just noise. Politicians recognise the benefits of it and after the elections it goes back to business as usual.

Abiti Nyono,

Sounds better that Mr. Blair has made it to westminister and most malawians in the UK are feeling better now. Indeed it's a relief to many but the questions towards impacts of immigration and asylum seekers remains an issue. Will blair remain a staunch supporter of immigration? or will he be forced to pull out from the UN resolutions on immigration? lets wait and see.

if Blair was to consider his campaign events and to win hearts of the many supporters, then definately he should be aware what the people wants-thats a strict immigration and asylum seekers policy. Blair and immigration were sensitive issues during the campign period and there is absolute need for adherence to such issues. it could be from this where Mr Blair could learn from.

Politicians are fun people. i believe Mr Blair has strategies to win back the 5.6% drop. he's ideas pertaining immigration could be stuff or soft but who knows. According to Labour manifesto IDs is just one of the precautions which will cope with the situation. its not yet coherent which other strategies will be put in place to determine significantly the control of immigration.

Anyway,i anticipate alot of immigration related problems and i am very sure and determined that things will not be the same again. There will be a diversity and uncondusive impact to illegal immigrats, asylum seekers and prospect students and visitors.

i foresee huge people been sent away from points of entry in the UK. indeed, It wot be easy, refering to yesterday's BBC one news broadcast where 8 illegal immigrates were arrested and charged and now pending deportation. Thats what am talking about.

These are the treads of affairs, more are coming. lets keep our fingers crossed.

Like I said earlier. Immigration is nothing but hot wind. I was since Thatcher and its been the same every election. If you hear some of the stuff that has been said about immigration in the past you won't want to be here. Believe me.

For one thing, this country, like every other in the west is big business-led. Big business that relies on migrant labour to survive. Either that or it will be outsourced to China or India, which is already happening. But thanks to cheap migrant labour, the  effects are slower and managable.

The reason the Tories picked up on it this time around is 'cause they over-estimated the UKIP and BNP effect that was apparent in last years by-elections. Neadless to say it sort of back-fired.

The negative effects of the Thatcher years still produces strong anti-conservative sentiment and this might be be irreversible if only they change tactics. Their failure is not very much of policy but of presentation.

There is no way any western governtment will pull out of the UN charter on asylum. It was just a lame tory threat. Right now there are serious leadership struggles about to begin in the Labour party, so immigration is going to dissapear from the radar for now. Of course the Xenophobic newspapers (the Sun, Daily Mail, Express) will still whip up frenzy but the government has other priorities.

kesso,

i like your courage kesso and your sentiments about immigration. i sincerely agree with you that experience is the best teacher and one could learn from it but as far as britain is concerned controlled immigration remainis an imperative priority for them. it would be difficult for this government to totally switch to other things ignoring immigration.i dont think they could be that stupid. An intergral policy on immigration will definately be set to monitor and remedy the current problems of immigration. Thats will be a systematic approach to cover up despite its failure "as you put" for britain to pull out from the UN charter.

it will be really unfair for yourself and others to take the history of Britain for granted. In the thatcher's old days they was insignificant impact on immigration. but now the case is different and its every body's concerns.  Who knew Kamuzu could be succeded and other strong empires falling? i strongly believe before britain switches to other key issues, a moment of capacitation will be set up to ensure a strong Home office and controlled immigration, and you know what that means.

i still forsee great revolutions but great for you Kesso with a british residence permit. most of us have student visas and we would like to finish our masters and switch to Phd before we go back home but will our visas be renewed?. That's way we become so curious about immigration issues.

I've seen immigration come and go. You name it, I've heard it. Saying that the country is full up or that there is an overflow of people from overseas flooding the country is laughable.  When my parents came here in the 60s they said exactly the same thing. The government has the correct figures and knows the truth. But like they say the problem with government is politicians; and they are by nature opportunistic and will say anything if they thought thats what you want to hear.

After a survey they found out that the most fears about immigration was from the areas that have the least amount of immigrants. Those in the cities that have Asian GPs, nurses, hotel staff, tube cleaners, you name it are less inclined to scream on about it.

Don't forget about the aging population, pensions gap etc. They need a younger population to pay for it. Same reason they opened up to migrants from the west indies post WWII after a drop in population and production. They antipathy towards them then was so horrible its still a national shame.

There's always an issue on it. Thank God we have a labour government and their liberal policies help ease the rhetoric.

My gratitude to Kesso and Manolo for your in-depth contributions on this topic, I’ve learned a lot from your coherent and very eloquent contributions. Your grammar of words was very exhilarating, something I haven’t seen in a while on this forum, and I think a lot of members of this forum could use your help in their sentence construction.
