MONEY MARKET INVESTMENT IN MALAWI
Permalink Closed

Hey Guys

I have come accross an important point about money market  investment in case you are not aware of. Currently interest earned  on investment in the banks is less than 10 % per annum ,on the other hand the discount houses are offering 20% per annum interest . I have noted that most organisation in malawi invest their money in discount house just for one reason high earning interest, so why not us  if you have cash over Mk100,000.00 .It is advisable to  invest in dscount houses.

Bro,

i think this is a good idea, but the discount house should take their information system to another level where you can do business online. This would help the pple that are not in malawi. This is a great suggestion bro, its one of the ways to set a foundation in Malawi. I dont believe in just education then 9-8 job without something on the side. Good stuff Bro

Dont talk the talk but walk the talk.

I am giving my opinion based on what is currently happening in Malawi at the moment as I am in Malawi right now. It is really high you our brothers start investing in Malawi now by sending those $$$z back home. This is way countries like Nigeria are moving forward.

Looking at the current economic situation there is a lot going on and in my opinion there are two sides of the coin here.

1. Since Bingu took over, he promised on the onset he desire to root out evil and that is corruption which is he is doing. He wants to bring good governace, control expenditure, good economic management and implement the unimplentables. Inshort he wants to win donor confidence which will result in inflow/release of funds meaning that at the end of the day

  • Inflation will go down

  • Interest rates will go down

To you our potential investors what does it mean you will have confidence in your own nation to invest. But now the question will rest on your decision making. Where do you invest? Looking at the above factors, you will notice that it will be better to invest in assets like buildings, capital equipement(start your company with machines) because now the cost of borrowing is cheaper (Risk is low because the interest rates are also low).

On the other hand during the Muluzi regime there was over expenditure by the government meaning it had to borrow heavily locally raising interset rates and inflation up hence the cost of borrowing went up and risk was higher. Each and every investor as much as possible wants to minimise risks hence no need to acquire those assets but go for money markets i.e. the treasury bills which were lucrative business for the financial houses even the then Managing Director of Stanbic Bank one Victor Mbewe admitted this in the local press. Mind you the risk of money markets is very low when inflation and cost of borrowing is higher.

On the hand with recent political unfoldings Bingu resigning from the party which sponsored him into government there is a lot of uncertainity in fact a kind of constitutional crisis so to speak and the donor is just watching meaning aid  can be with held. This is extended to investors as well as they are watching these unfoldings. These developments can affect the above factors.

Finally my advise to you is watch closely the economic and political trends for you to make an informed decision. We are looking to your investment to boost Malawi may be we can be the African Tiger.
