The man charged with stabbing a woman to death Tuesday night in a nursing home parking lot was arrested late Wednesday in Springfield, Mo.
Billy Alete Chilambula, also known as Gabriel Kambale, 25, is reported to have confessed to several people that he stabbed Yvonne Lee, who had been his girlfriend.
Chilambula, formerly of Malawi in southern Africa, remains under guard in a Springfield hospital where he is undergoing treatment for what police believe to be self-inflicted stab wounds to his neck.
An arrest warrant was issued for Chilambula late Wednesday charging him with the murder of Lee, 35, of the 2000 block of North Olive Street.
Lee died after being stabbed in the throat outside the Cardinal Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, 1121 E. LaSalle Ave., where she had just gotten off work about 11 p.m. A witness said Lee was cleaning snow off her car when she began to scream and struggle with a man.
Lee was taken to Memorial Hospital, where she died as a result of hemorrhaging from her wound.
Employees at the nursing home told police Lee had been having problems with her boyfriend, Chilambula. The witness's description of Lee's assailant matched Chilambula.
Investigators in the St. Joseph County/Metro Homicide Unit obtained information after the incident that the suspect was en route to Springfield on Wednesday.
Sgt. Randy Kaps notified Springfield police of the name and address of the person Chilambula intended to visit there -- reportedly a former girlfriend. Missouri police were also given a description of his vehicle.
Springfield police set up surveillance at the apartment. About 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Kaps was notified Chilambula's vehicle was parked at the apartment complex address of his former girlfriend.
The Springfield Police Special Response Team surrounded the apartment, where Chilambula reportedly exited voluntarily with several wounds. Although the cause of the injuries is under investigation, police believe he stabbed himself in the throat.
He was taken to a local hospital where he underwent surgery Wednesday night and remains under police guard.
The night of the fatal stabbing Chilambula is reported to have called two women and confessed to them what he had done, according to a probable cause affidavit filed with the charges. Chilambula also talked to police officers on his cell phone Tuesday night.
A friend of Lee's told police Chilambula said he was upset with Lee because she would not give him some of his property. He had been living at her home on Olive Street.
The friend told police Chilambula admitted he stabbed Lee over his belongings, telling the friend she wouldn't understand why he did it.
A sister of Lee's also took a call Tuesday night from Chilambula in which he said he was upset with her sister and had stabbed her, according to court documents. The woman tape-recorded the call and turned the tape over to Metro Homicide officers.
Sgt. David Newton, a Metro Homicide Unit officer, praised the quick thinking of the woman for recording the conversation with the suspect.
It was information from the sister that allowed police to apprehend Chilambula so quickly, officials said.
Authorities are still investigating Chilambula's origin, his visa status and why he came to the United States.
Police seized Chilambula's vehicle in Springfield so it could be searched for evidence. Springfield police also interviewed the person Chilambula went to visit.
Metro Homicide officers were going to Missouri today to talk to witnesses and obtain reports to augment the evidence they already have, Prosecutor Michael Dvorak said.
In a news conference Thursday, Cmdr. Tim Corbett of the County/Metro Homicide Unit said statements given by people in Missouri "will be very helpful in the prosecution."
It was not immediately known when Chilambula would be released from the hospital to appear in court in Springfield or if he will return voluntarily to St. Joseph County to face the murder charge.
Although it may be 10 days or more before he can be released from the hospital, Dvorak said his staff is beginning the paperwork necessary to extradite Chilambula.
Chilambula has another case pending in South Bend from an unrelated stabbing. He was charged with a misdemeanor count of battery in December for allegedly stabbing a man. That trial is set for March 8.
well, from the look of things...the dude asked for it, so let him face the consequenses of his silly act...he will be so unfortunate when he is extradited cuz, hey....ndende za kumalawi is just unihabitable...and from the look of things...there is concrete evidence to lock up the dude....hopeless case,...no help can be rendered here...the thing is he has just turnished the images of us malawians....

Even if Hell freezes, I can never ever feel sorry for this guy. As a matter of fact, the only thing I can help him do is buy him a gun so he can shoot himself only, not anybody else. He should be ashemed to call himself Malawian. One thing I know when he goes to Jail he should say bye bye to his virginity coz Baba will be waiting for him. Baba probably looks like the Guy in the movie, "LIFE", that wanted Corn Bread. I bet he will eat Chilambula's corn bread.
Please, next time don't forget to acknowledge the source if you happen to use some author's material in your posting. Never assume, if that was the case, that whoever reads it will automatically know you took it from 'South Bend Tribune'. That's what they call 'plagiarism', and you should be aware that it is even against the law just to copy some **** without prior consent of the owner, aight! I'm just lookin' out, homie.
Mr Zeze,
This boy Billy or Gabriel(whatever you call him), cannot be extradited to Malawi coz that's not where the crime took place. If he killed somebody in nyasaland and ran into USA, the Malawi government would have all the reason to ask the US govt to have him sent back to Malawi. In the present instance, he will be extradited to Indiana.
amalawi munthu uyu tikuyenela kumumvera chisoni ndi mmalawi basi no matter what you cant change it right now we have to defend him my suggestion is munthuyu anali ndi vuto mwina inali misala it could be possible
So twisa you sayin we should defend the nigga because he is Malawian??? uhmm no thanks. I dont know abouty'all, but i sure as hell dont support murders, and I aint gonna start now just because he is malawian...fukk that! shame shame!
i support you ma nigga 2 words.....there ain't no flippin way we can start backin up for this nigga cuz he from malawi....he needs to be incarcerated....even if they give him the chair i won't mind...he will even face a less painful death than his culprit who had to die painfully with a knife......
feeling sorry for who? who ever wants to support this guy is free to do that..but hes nothing but a stupid guy who is going to face american justice ..as mr bush has said it.JUst because he is from malawi doesnt mean a thing.....i would rather feel sorry for the real people in this situation ..and that is the deceased's ladys children.
