It has been assessed that the last 10 years lake Malawi's water level is going down.Among the factors causing this, can be loss water from its catchment area. We have always stressed the need of afforesting the catchment area but looking at the poverty level of the masses in the village and lack of motivation on the part of our leaders to address the situation. Will lake malawi survive in the next fifty years to come? What should be done to arrest situation? Can you visualise Malawi without a lake and see how it will look like? Something needs to be done yesterday and not tommorrow ladies and gentlemen. What do you think?

DEPARTMENT OF FISHERIES REALESED THAT REPORT AND WHATEVER YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT HAPPENS IN RAIN SEASON BUT YOU ARE FORGETTING SHIRE RIVER IS BUSY DRAINING THE LAKE AS WELL .
VISIT PLACES LIKE MADELCO FISHERIES WHERE THEIR JIT IS BEING EXTENDED BECAUSE THE WATER LEVEL HAS BECOME SO LOW THAT SOME OF THEIR TRAWLING BOATS ARE NOT ABLE TO DOCK ON THE OLD JIT .ALL THESE ARE A RESULT OF WATER LEVEL GOING DOWN ,IT IS EVEN VISIBLE FROM THE EDGES WHERE THE LEVEL USED TO BE.
WHEN I SAW THE REPORT I USED TO DISPUTE BUT WHEN I SAW SOMETHING OF THAT SORT AT MADELCO FISHERIES I WAS SHOCKED AND I FELT THE ASSESSMENT SOMEHOW IS MAKING SOME SENSE .
WE CAN ARGUE ALL DAY BUT THE TRUTH IS ON THE GROUND AND ONE DAY WE WILL WAKE UP TO FIND OUR LAKE DISAPPERED.

I WAS AT THE LAKE JUST LAST WEEK AND WHAT AM TALKING ABOUT IS WHAT I SAW . IN APRIL IT IS NORMAL THE LEVEL IS HIGH BECAUSE RAIN IS STILL FALLING IN MOST AREAS BUT COME LAST WEEK NO RAIN MAN THATS WHEN YOU CAN TELL WHERE THE NORMAL WATER LEVEL USED TO BE AND WHAT IS NOW.

You were at the lake last week, but we live at the lake maybe you should have been there some yrs back and you could have understood what am talking about. My Uncles Libanda used to be about 10 m from the shoreline just a few yrs ago!

bnk444, Dont just consider one fact. Remember the ice is slowly melting in the Artic circle and where will all that water go? I have been to MALDECO but I have never gone beyond pogulitsila Nsomba paja. I went to Namiyasi Fisheries rather and I was surprised to see the Trawlers at the very beginning of the Jetty! I remember in 1996 they couldnt even reach the tip of the Jetty. Sometimes you have to consider the fact that kukamapanga mafunde, nchenga umakhala ukukwila miyendo ya ma Jetty pangonopangono, hence making it difficult for the Trawlers to reach the Jetty. Go to Monkey-bay Dock. Look at the Jetty and ask people where the water level used to be. You cannot now walk from the Dock to Monkey-bay fisheries. Zakunyanja Mchawa sungamunamize! our lake one day will not dissapear but you will one day wake up and find yourself in a lake!
My friend there is a report you can check with Fisheries Department and as i have earlier said i saw it ,indeed the level is going down. You talked of water melting at artic circle that is true but you are forgeting to say that one thing lake Malawi is above a sea level at a higher ground and water from the lake goes to the ocean. It is the costal areas that will be swallowed up when Artic cirle melts .
Iam writing what i have just seen last week at Maldeco and i have not been to Monkey bay of late and i intend to go there in three weeks time and have a chance verify what you are talking about and will come back to you .

When was this fisheries report released? ineso I have been to the lake that was last month ndiye I dont think mwezi watha mvula imagwabe. I still believe there some errors on the report
I havent read the thread in full, but I just want to point out that if the report relates to the long term, you probably wont be able to detect the falling levels by simply looking at the lake over a period of a few months. In the short term, the falling levels will be extremely small (on top of being affected by things like rainfall, etc). In the long run, the report is probably 100% correct.

What makes you sure that that the departments research is accurate? You have probably not been to the lake and you dont know what you are talking about 100% my foot. What can you tell me about the department which is failing to conserve the fish?
My esteemed friends am writing this basing on the shoreline in my Village of Luwuchi in Rumphi district.
My grandparents when they came from Songea the water levels were (as reported by them) about 30-50 metres away from there houses in 78 they were forced to go upland after floods then come the years i would recall when i was home there was a tree that we used to dive from it was in the lake all the time but not anymore it is ashore and to attest to BNK the water levels are going down indeed where the lake was twenty years ago is not the same ITS DECREASING but am basing this purely on my village situation am yet to see any literature pertaining to this subject maybe its the north south thing that the lake is being drained from the north.

Thing do change, for the better or for worse. We should not expect what was yesterday to be the same today! No way! But there is a consolation in all this, nature tends to balance itself. So there might be receeding waters somewhere while at the same time there are floods at a certain place. As someone said to Amikhe before, those are the harsh realities of life.
Everybody should do his/her bit to conserve the environment but it doesn't help when all your leaders can think of is section 65!

There's a typing error in my post, I meant to say I haven't read the THREAD in full. It's corrected now. My bad.
What has the department's ability to protect fish got to do with the accuracy of the report?
Bingiza, I am aware of places in the South (my aunty's old place in Monkey Bay to be specific) that have seen their shorelines recede in a similar fashion over the decades. That's why I'm hesitant to write off the idea that water levels in the lake as a whole might be falling.
Awmygawd, It has got to do with everything . They are incompetent, Maldeco can teach them a lesson or two.
Are you saying that their inability to protect the fish is reflective of their incompetence across the board? I don't think you're comparing like with like. For one thing, the Department's inability to protect the fish may be due to factors other than incompetence, especially resource issues and Gvt's priorities (e.g. the effect of free fertilizer on the quality of Lake Malawi's water. Also, the skills and resources needed to carry out those tasks are different. It wouldn't take much to compile a decent report. The research on which it was based could have been contracted out, for instance.
awmy, Resources play a minor role in the departments fish conservation. I mean it can only take a couple of law enforcement officers to accomplish the task of kuteteza tinsomba ting`onoting`ono, but still they fail to do this and they cannot consider the option of building thousands of cages in the lake like the way Maldeco did. To them the fish farmers seem to be too hot to handle.

Fish farmers or harvesters? These guy are reaping big time where they did not sow and aquaculture cannot work for everbody its expensive Abu you should know better u mean a local guy from Mbaluku can venture into that? Its these big companies that can assist like they do with fertiliser loans i bet they should do the same with fish farmers, i have tasted the chambo from the cages its just as good and clean too i can hammer the whole head osaphwanyako mwala olo umodzi. What we really should be talking about is the effect on the lake vis-a-vis the lake beings and long term effects towards these fish HARVESTERS.
