does witchcraft really exist?
just curious....do people really have the power to take away another persons life/fly in the middle of the night etc..? i was reading the ethel kamwendo story in the daily times thats what got me pondering.........
i ve always half heartedly accepted that witch craft does exist, but with each passing day am having my doubts...i recently found myself in a middle of a discussion about somebody who had just passed away,i know for a fact that the person had full blown aids(i heard it from someboby who works in the medical field)..which led to his passing away..now romour has it that he was bewitched by one of his workmates...i found myself in afix because i knew the reason  for the illness that led to his death

One of the countrys celebrated gospel songbirds, Ethel Kamwendo-Banda, is being accused of hiring musclemen to assault her aunt on suspicion of killing the musicians brother, Mtunduwatha.

However, the musician denied the claim, saying it was some people in the neighbourhood that beat up her aunt.

Mtunduwatha died on June 1 from an unknown disease, according to relations at Makheta in Blantyre.

The aunt, Molly Kamwendo, 57, was admitted to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital after sustaining serious injuries to her left arm and both legs.

The aunt is expected to have an operation on her left leg and has her left lungs bent due to the beating she got from suspected thugs she accuses Kamwendo-Banda of sending.

Speaking from her hospital bed on Sunday, Molly said the relationship between her and Ethels family has been sour for some time and they have not been on talking terms.

She, however, denied ever practising witchcraft, which she said was at the centre of her differences with Ethels family.

Molly accused the gospel singer of hiring about six roughnecks who assaulted her with panga knives, hoe handles and metal objects.

She said the beating followed her refusal to succumb to demands by Ethels family for a witchcraft confession.

It all started when Ethels brother [Mtunduwatha] came back from South Africa sick. I did not go to see him while he was sick because I was at the village harvesting. When he died, someone told me not to go to the funeral because Ethels family had planned to kill me so I did not go to the funeral either, Molly explained.

She said on May 29 Ethel went to Molly's home looking for her, claiming a child had confessed that the aunt was a witchcraft trainer.

When I returned home, I found Ethel asking my son Michael that some children were claiming to be taught witchcraft by him and so she [Ethel] suspected that my son should have learnt it from me. She forced me to confess that I am a witch and said if I didnt, people would torch my house and I would be killed, she alleged.

Molly added that two boys grabbed and dragged her towards the house of Ethels mother where they beat her and Michael, who was also admitted to QECH, but has since been discharged.

She also said after she denied being a witch, Ethel left her and told the boys to do their job, an allegation the gospel musician denies.

They told me that they wanted to kill us. I was left for dead. I soiled myself and urinated and they embarrassed me further by stripping me naked in front of all people that were watching, Molly said, adding while this happened Ethel chased away people who wanted to intervene because it is a family matter.

Molly, who said she was HIV positive and on ARV treatment, expressed fear that she might lose her legs and hand.

I dont know what wrong I have done to them to deserve such satanic act. If she believes in God, why didnt she just pray for me? she queried.

Molly said she reported the matter to Nkolokoti and Limbe Police stations but was not assisted.

However, in an interview from her base in Bangwe in Blantyre, the gospel artist denied hiring the people who beat up her aunt, arguing the men were people around the community.

She said the allegations were only aimed at tarnishing her image as a successful gospel musician.

Kamwendo-Banda said there was no way she could have done such a thing to an aunt whom she said she had been assisting in various ways.

If you go to police today, you will not find anywhere where it says I have a case for beating anyone, but you will find where it says people in Makhetha have beaten someone.

People have been telling my mother that her sister is teaching their children witchcraft, but we never took such claims to be true. If she is not really a witch, why then didnt she come to attend the funeral of my brother? Its the children who have confessed, Kamwendo-Banda said.

The musician said on the day of the funeral, her aunt was busy brewing beer at her home and was seen doing this as the funeral procession passed by her home.

I overheard my uncle, who is siding with my aunt, that he would go to newspapers and radios to deal with me. But he will not succeed because I believe in God. I should have been in the news talking about my new album now but look at what is happening. My hands are clean and so is my conscience, she said matter-of-factly.

Ethel said the children confessed being taught witchcraft after she prayed for her brothers healing, adding she was the one who rescued Molly from people who were beating her up.

Meanwhile, Southern Region Police spokesman Davie Chingwalu said three people have been arrested so far in connection with Mollys beating. He did not have the suspects names

Chingwalu, who said investigations into the matter were continuing, said the three would be charged with an act intended to cause bodily harm.

This is the second time this year a gospel artists has made headlines for reasons unrelated to their artistic work.

First was Grace Chinga-Moffat whose marriage ended in court after she accused her former husband of starving her of sex, impotence and infidelity.

True. Reading between the lines, the brother's "unknown disease" could have easily been AIDS. Seeing that he was based in SA prior to his death, it can't be ruled out. I see Malawi is changing as regards open discussion of HIV. At least everyone is aware of the aunty's condition. In the past however, some people would have linked her (hypothetical) death or HIV related health problems to even more black magic e.g. a magical retaliation by kamwendo's family.

let me agree that most pipo who die nowadays are in one way or another linked to witchcraft,a witch only kills where God has killed already. For example I had a brother (+) and I tell you when he died pipo wanted to start creating stories of witchcraft until I told all of them off. There is magic and I know that. With ethel,am sorry to say she is not a believer and she was carried by the evil spirit.

Ethel claims to be very spiritual, why didnt she pour the Holy Ghost fire on the witch instead of conspiring to harm her with an intention of causing grievous bodily harm. Thats what happens when you forsake the true DEEN of Allah!

what really interests me is the fact that ethel claims to believe in God then accusses her aunt of not attending her nephews funeral cause she(the aunt) is a witch. its sad that these born again christians are not practicing what they preach. i thought she should be on the forefront trashing the accusations.

but then lets be honest does witchcraft exist? i dont think so. i`ve known lot of loners, elderly, business people, the poor, mostly odd people who stand out of society being accused nyanga why do associate the odd with witchcraft heavens know. i think its just one way of discriminating and stigmatising those who stand out  society. i remember a very beautiful girl at one of secondary school who was accused of the being a witch and was smearing **** on other girls for them not pull but it was found the monger was the  ugly bitch who blokes wouldnt look at her twice and invented the lies cause she was just jealousy. people will have to prove beyond any doubt the existence of the craft i for one to believe.
