Malawi Vice President Dr Cassim Chilumpha under a year long house arrest has been cleared by the Office of President and Cabinet (OPC) to lead Malawians paying their last respect at Sanjika Palace and burying First Lady Mrs Ethel Mutharika on June 9.
Chilumpha wrote the OPC through his lawyers to ask for permission to attend the burial ceremony and his request has been granted without problems, one of his lawyers Viva Nyimba has confirmed.
"Yes, I can confirm that Chief Secretary to the Office of President and Cabinet (OPC) Mr. Bright Msaka telephoned giving a go ahead to the Vice President to lead Malawians at Sanjika and Thyolo," Nyimba said in a telephone interview with Nyasa Times.
Chilumpha has also been designated in the funeral programme to lead mourners in Blantyre viewing the body of late Madam Mutharika at Sanjika Palace.
On protocol, OPC is also recognizing Chilumpha as the top senior government official in the absence of President Mutharika who is bereaved.
Nyimba, a prominent civil rights lawyer commended government gesture by reaching out to the Vice President saying Malawians need to unite in these trying times irrespective of political differences.
"We can disagree politically but in times like these, we need to agree. Government must be commended for their action. They have not just let him attend the functions but assume his role as Vice President leading the nation according to protocol," he said.
Chilumpha, whose arrest on April 28, 2006 on treason allegation has been largely viewed as political persecution, sent a message of condolence to the State President.
"On my own behalf and on behalf of the entire Chilumpha family, I wish to convey my deepest and sincere sympathies to Your Excellency and the First Family on the death of Her Excellency, the First Lady, Madam Ethel Mutharika," Chilumpha said in a message asking the President to accept his sincere condolences.
The Vice-President described the First Lady as a true Mother, a champion of the needy and the poor.
President Mutharika also sacked Chilumpha from the vice president position in February 2006 but the president was forced to reinstate him following a court ruling.
A member of the opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) a party which sponsored Mutharika to power, Chilumpha contends that he is facing political persecution because of his refusal to join Mutharika's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).
Billy Banda executive director of local human rights body, Malawi Watch, who earlier appealed to government to allow the Vice-President to attend the burial, has welcomed the development describing it as "necessary".
Malawians participating in a Capital FM Radio phone-in programme yesterday commended Chilumpha for consoling Mutharika as a true sign of umunthu.

Inu anthu inu! dont get misled by this yellow journalist. The author potrays the story as if the Vice President will have a special role, but in actual fact he is going there just like any other prominent Malawian. If the statement, i quote "We can disagree politically but in times like these, we need to agree. Government must be commended for their action. They have not just let him attend the functions but assume his role as Vice President leading the nation according to protocol," Nyimba.
I would have loved if the author had quoted or had managed to get hold of Bright Msaka to confirm this assetion other than fully beleaving the Lawyer on the defence side. And all along the defence have been fighting in courts to have the Vice Presidency office respected in such a way
Another quote, "Yes, I can confirm that Chief Secretary to the Office of President and Cabinet (OPC) Mr. Bright Msaka telephoned giving a go ahead to the Vice President to lead Malawians at Sanjika and Thyolo," Nyimba said in a telephone interview .with Nyasa Times.
However other sources quoting the same defence lawyer ie today' nation confirms that Bright Msaka 4ned Vice President allowing him to ''view the remains in Blantyre and attend the burrial in Thyolo''. Nothing like ''to lead Malawians at Sanjika and Thyolo.
I mean nothing personal, if the goverment recognises him in such a way, fair and good for Malawians! but to be fed lies, i detest
