SHOULD BINGU APPEAR IN PARLIAMENT FOR QUESTIONING?
Permalink Closed

Malawi.
Parliament is converging next month and stake holders mainly the opposition wish to summon the presindent, Mr Bingu Wa Muntharika in his capacity as Minister of Agriculture to shade some light on the recent chaos regarding the distribution of fertilizer coupons.

The issue at hand is, should he appear in parliament to make a statement and answer the pertianing questions?

My personal point of view is this: If the constitution has a provision that grants for him to be summoned, let it be so,as long as some masses in the legislature do not utilise this opportunity to pursue their personal vendettas. This matter is exigent to the poor famers who constitute an ample sum of the population in Malawi.

Positive, neutral and negative comments are all invited.

The summoning is like a "wolf in a sheep skin" these opposition guys have been trying to get Bingu to attend to them for such a long time and this is an opportune time faking the fertiliser issue as a scape goat.

Studa the issue is the president, not whoever is going to represent him this is the kind of replies that take the topics elsewhere. Get in line with it.

The situation on the ground in Malawi is that there will be a bumper harvest this year.  There is alot of maize in markets and the price has gone down to k600.00 per bag. Two years ago maize was selling at K3,000.00 per bag at this time of the year and people were literally sleeping at the Admarc depot.

The fertilizer coupon system has changed the food situation in Malawi. The coupon distribution process had alot of problems.  In some cases very few coupons were allocated to a district and then the chiefs were selling the coupons to rich businessmen who did not deserve them.

The president ordered the police to arrest anyone found selling the coupons and as such some chiefs were arrested to the annoyance of the opposition who feel mafumu akuyenera kulemekezedwa, you cannot arrest a chief.

I don't see why the president should be called to Parliament?  I think they are calling him for something else, maybe to impeach him.
