Monday, 30 October 2006 Entertainment Two Nanzikambe actors desert in the UK Nanzikambe Theatre’s dream of returning home an extremely happy lot from their European tour, where they presented two short plays as part of the International short text project in Oslo, Norway and at the International Workshop Festival in London, ended up in a gloomy picture. Two members of the cast––anchor of The Little Prince’s Dipo Katimba and sound engineer Thoko Kapiri—got caught in the thicket of London’s pleasures and absconded. While the rest of the chameleons—Aaron Ngalonde, Misheck Mzumara, Mbumba Mbewe, Noah Bulambo and Basimenye Mwalwanda—were on their way to the airport for a flight back home, Katimba and Kapiri wore different colours and disappeared to where they could not be traced. It was a dramatic dousing of gloom and pity at a glittering picture the group had painted. “You can imagine, after such glowing recognition of Malawian talent, it was a shame that the two decided to abscond and lose themselves in the UK. They had assured Nanzikambe management that they would be at the airport on the agreed date. Nanzikambe was aware of the temptation to break contract and stay in the UK and did everything in its power to keep in touch with the group. “But Thoko and Dipo turned their phones off and simply didn’t turn up at the airport,” says a worried Eveleigh. “Nanzikambe management has taken disciplinary action with regard to the two who stayed in the UK. Thoko has since lost his position on the Nanzikambe team. “As an artistic organisation of excellence, we are not affected by losing these two. Nanzikambe’s vision and scope is far greater than one or two people! We are lucky to have such a gifted group of people still committed to the mission of nourishing the hearts and minds of the Malawian public with their stories,” she pours out her all. The actors’ abscondment was to be felt later when the group, fresh from the European tour, had to proceed to Zambia for another performance. “Just a day after returning to Malawi, the Nanzikambe Little Prince team were due to travel to Zambia to perform. The biggest question that lingered was how would this be possible without the Little Prince, a character played by Katimba, and without Kapiri who was to operate the complicated sound track?” she says. It was Brave Mnyayi––an actor who had also just returned from the UK where he performed with Bilimankhwe Arts formed by former Nanzikambe director Kate Stafford––that saved the day and played the key role, the Little Prince. And Eveleigh heaps praises on the lad. “He learnt The Little Prince’s lines in two days and gave a stunning performance that dazzled the Zambians. Fred Muphuwa again came to our rescue with his sound engineering talent,” she says. She revels in that the Director of Culture at the Alliance Francaise in Lusaka branded the cast and play “glorious”. She then wears a brave face to narrate the groups experience from the tour. “Malawian theatre is thriving as never before — performers and theatrical writing has never been so well exposed as it has been in the last year,” she says. The first performance piece by Smith Likongwe told a compelling contemporary story of an opposition MP under siege at his house on the day of tabling an important bill in Parliament. As confidence deteriorates in the MP’s motives, the MP himself comes under enormous pressure from an all-powerful ‘icon’ figure. The performance style draws upon traditional Nyau and Gule Wamkulu rituals and song, and uses painted faces and stylised performance to create a nightmare vision. The second piece told a bitter-sweet romantic tale of what happens when a woman comes back to a man she left some time ago. The story looks at the way men deal with the concept of ‘freedom’ in relation to women. Franzisca Aarflot, Artistic Director of the Det Apne Theatre in Oslo said “the performance was wonderful”. “There is such talent here. And the talent is even very well directed. I feel privileged to have been given this intimate truthful experience of a place so distant.” Also in attendance was Malawian High Commissioner to England, Dr Francis Moto. Eveleigh says it has always been Nanzikambe’s ambition to create theatre of an international standard – the glowing reception from audiences in Europe is testament to this achievement. “I am confident that Malawian performers will continue to grow with more international exposure in the future. This talented group is working at a top level now,” she says.

I know both of these guys, and also know that this story was not correct. They have visas valid for 6 months from September 2006 and were not under contract with Nanzikambe. All they did was decide to stay in the UK until their visas ran out, which will be at the end of february 2007. Melissa Eveleigh was angry with them because she wanted them to come back to Malawi and continue working for her (although she had refused to give them contracts), so when they decided to stay she fed inaccurate information to the press. This has tarnished their reputation, but the authorities will be able to tell from their passports that they have done nothing illegal. Just wanted to set the record straight!

OK, at the risk of breaching confidentiality - they are no longer a couple, but are together as friends, staying with a relative of the girl. They are both fine, but worried that although they are NOT in the UK illegally (THEY HAVE VISAS!!!!) all the gossip will make trouble for them when they go back to Malawi.
why do people always want to believe the worst of their fellow Malawians? Gonjetsani adani onse ... njala, nthenda NSANJE. need i say more?

AFTER BEING ON MALAWIANA FOR SOME TIME I STILL WONDER WHY some malawianas think what ever some do whether he follows procedure or not they will always back him up. Mtima umenewo ndi umene umayipitsa mbili ya our country. when you blame them they will tell you that you are jealousy, you dont wish them well. One time when I was in UK, my freind complained to how hard it was to earn a living there and how he has been running away from Police officers and Immigration officials. He confessed that he was not a free man. He told me that if can try to visit Malawi, he will not be able to go back to you UK and prefered to live and die there.
Myself I cant lead such a life. I would rather be frank than do what ever the two actors did because next nzungu amene anachifacilitate their trip will not trust we Malawians because of these two actors. Ndiye Kaya, for me kaya wina andinyoze, I HAVE BEEN IN MANY PLACES ON THIS PLANET AND AM STILL MOVING UP AND DOWN NOT TO BE HELD IN CONFINEMENT AS SOME OF YOU WHO ARE ALWAYS ON THE RUN BECAUSE OF CHIBWANA. Osamationongera mbili chifukwa cha nkhwilu ndi dziko la eni
