Government has instituted tough measures governing entry and conduct of foreigners in the country to track down, prosecute and deport illegal immigrants who have been described as a threat to national security. Home Affairs and Internal Security Minister Uladi Mussa told journalists in Blantyre on Wednesday that all foreigners getting into Malawi will be interviewed at the ports of entry and that they will have to comply with all rules and regulations, which are being revised. He said an asylum seeker permit shall be issued at the port of entry, restricting the person to reside at a transit shelter on condition that he or she should apply for asylum within a reasonable period. “If a person who has the permit fails to apply for asylum or it is discovered that he or she is not a genuine asylum seeker then he shall be expelled from Malawi as soon as possible,” he said. Mussa added that from now granting of Temporary Employment Permit (TEP) will not be automatic and that prospective expatriate employees will have to apply before arrival. “TEP will be issued in areas of specific manpower shortages within the local labour market hence no foreigner should be employed without a permit or in anticipation of approval of an application as that person knowingly employing such a person shall be liable to criminal prosecution,” he said. The minister said the new measures will also restrict Business Resident Permits to genuine investors with a start up capital of not less than US$50,000. Mussa said he will set up a committee that will verify applications to minimise risk of the registration of briefcase business. The minister said people will no longer get citizenship through marriages. The enforcement of this regulation will, however, require the amendment of section 47 of the Constitution which provides that citizenship can be acquired through marriage. He said this has given rise to marriages of convenience where foreigners marry Malawian ladies for the purpose of obtaining residential status and not spousal relations.
I wonder if all these stated will be enforced?!! Malawi has so many really good ideas but action is minimal. Do you believe the immigration department will definately put those measures into use? If it does then , yeah, these pipo need a taste of their own medicine in a foreign land!!!!
