E NYIMBA International of Aba yesterday confirmed its readiness to retain the Champions League trophy by hitting debutantes Bakili Bullets of Malawi, six goals to nil.
The Aba side, which a fortnight ago defeated African Sports of Abidjan 3-0 in the Ivoirien capital, showed what they had in store for the helpless Malawians from the first blast of the referee's whistle.
The match was barely six minutes old when Joetex Frimpong opened scores for the 'People's Elephant' to signal the beginning of the goal rush.
Frimpong, who led the goal scorers' chart in the competition last year until injury knocked him out of the race, was a menace tot he Malawians, who seemed hampered by the waterlogged pitch of the Enyimba International Stadium, Aba.
Although the Malawians tried to put up a fight by booting the ball away each time it got to their goal area, it was obvious that Enyimba was out to record a goal feast.
Ndidi Anumunu, who scored the last goal in the Abidjan defeat of African Sports, recorded the second goal of the match in the 20th minute to end of the first half 2-0 in Enyimba's favour.
If the first half was rewarding for Enyimba fans, the second half proved to be, perhaps, the best moments for the team's faithful.
Enyimba, which massacred Insurance of Benin 5-0 in a local league match a fortnight ago, went a step further, scoring four more goals to finish off the fight against the Malawians.
Onyekachi Okonkwo opened the second half goal rush when he converted a 65th minute penalty, while man of the match, Muri Ogunbiyi got goal number four in the 86th minute of the match watched by Governor Orji Uzor Kalu of Abia and Peter Odili of Rivers State.
Chibuzor Ozurumba, who wore jersey number five, scored goal number five in the 88th minute, just as Muri Ogunbiyi fittingly closed the account on the dot of the 90th minute with the sixth goal.
For his efforts, Ogunbiyi won the MVP award of N100,000 donated by Pepsi. frustrated:
