STALE MATE IN PARLIAMENT IS OUR DEMOCRACY PROGRESSIVE?

President Bingu Wamutharika spoke to the nation yesterday on the drama that has arisen in the nationala assembly. The opposition MPs led by John Tembo are threating to shoot down this years' Budget ,they are demanding their salaries ,be rised to equal to the new proposed salaries  of high court judges of Mk700,000 /month but the government rejected that proposal.

Yesterday Tembo and other leaders of opposition met Bingu to discuss the issue and according to reliable sources they did not come up with anything concrete. The president decided to freeze all salary increases this year and will appoint a salaries board to come up with recommendations. However the president went to alert the public of the consequences of  the budget not being approved by the honurable members of parliamment.

However people are of mixed views some do agree with the stance taken by opposition members of parliament that the government needs to be punished for poaching MPs from opposition and not willing to raise the salary of MPs, on the other hand some think this will affect the poor Malawians  who depend the government for their basic facilities such as medicines in hospital, the much neeeded fertilizers .

In the end do we desccribe our democracy as progressive or retrogressive basing on the issue above? Are the two points raised by the opposition worth holding all Malawians at ransom?Whats your opinion?
