Happy independence Day What does this mean to people ?
Not much to me. Nothing positive anyway; I don't know if I find it amusing, embarassing or offensive, but the concept of a Malawian independence day drips with irony... Especially when it is celebrated.
Nelson Mandela is absolutely correct when he says the long walk to freedom is not an easy one. That is why it is neccesary that on this day Malawi's fallen sons are acknowledged. Today, the people of Nyasaland celebrate the struggle. However, the struggle is still with us all. Some of you Malawianas are walking this earth with the foot of your forefathers on one foot, and the foot of you colonist on the other. Today not only marks the day of independence, but a day of self confrontation. That is why the supreme one has taken time out of working the math of an elder to restore order and justice on this day. Those of you who chose not to uphold this day will be amended in due time.
with this Ieave you with a thought of the anthem. Mlungu dalitsani Malawi Mumsunge m'mtendere. Gonjetsani adani onse, Njala, nthenda, nsanje. Lunzitsani mitima yathu, Kuti tisaope. Mdalitse Mtsogoleri nafe, Ndi Mai Malawi.
2. Malawi n'dziko lokongola, La chonde ndi ufulu, Nyanja ndi mphepo ya m'mapiri, Ndithudi tadala. Zigwa, mapiri, nthaka, dzinthu, N'mphatso zaulere. Nkhalango, madambo abwino. Ngwokoma Malawi.
3. O! Ufulu tigwirizane, Kukweza Malawi. Ndi chikondi, khama, kumvera, Timutumikire. Pa nkhondo nkana pa mtendere, Cholinga n'chimodzi. Mai, Bambo, tidzipereke, Pokweza Malawi.
I agree with that ..you need to see hope..we are walking with a colonial foot on one leg and the history of our past on the other ..we need to learn how to take even strokes... there is irony when u consider neo-colonialism but lets see the glass as half full instread of half empty ...
So happy Indepencend Day to all Malawians everywhere ..the road is long.. and Rome was nt built in a day, niether were great nations...our country is 41 years old now... it is still young. America celebrated its 230th Birthday...where was America in 41 yrs of Independence or other young countires ..lets loko forward not behind ,but lets always remember the past as we take those footsteps in to the future
Yes, but today; with globalization, bullying western countries, post-cold war politics, multi-nationals that are more powerful than most governments, the world is a different place than it was when America was 41 so it is pointless to compare.
What is the day celebrating anyway?
The people of Malawi might be able to vote for their leaders but who calls the shots in the end huh? I was reading a story a while back about some people who had been arrested in Malawi for terrorist activities and "renditioned" because of this so-called "war on terror".
America snaps their fingers and even irrelevant countries like Malawi start kissing ass.
I think every country in Africa has to actually make it a point to add the hatred of America to its national policy, like Iran or North Korea. The west is the problem; be it the UK or US. Now that may be simplifying it but you get the picture.
'The moment the slave resolves that he will no longer be a slave, his fetters fall.He frees himself and shows the way to others.Freedom and slavery are mental states.'-Mahatma Gandhi.
Happy independence day Mother Malawi.God bless Malawi.flame

independence day to me means the day we all should remember that we are on our own as a country, that we shall not always accuse UK for colonising us, that we shall forget about slavery and forge ahead as a nation, as a unit, that we shall stop feeling sorry about our poor living conditions and that we shall work hard to improve our lives, it is a day that we shall do "something" about our lives for the development of Malawi, that we shall be responsible about our environment and that each person shall take charge to ensure we have better living standards individually which will in the end have a mojor impact on the whole country; "the domino effect" if you know what i mean
