Two arrested in K6m Mzuni scam

Police in Mzuzu have arrested two more Mzuzu University officers after an audit report implicated them in a K6 financial scam that was uncovered at the university.
The two are Reuben Hango, Dean of Students at the institution, and Javius Chimungu, an accountant. This is the second arrest for Chimungu after his first one on 24th March this year.
Mzuzu Police Public Relations Officer Edward Longwe confirmed the arrest Wednesday.
“The two were arrested after an audit report implicated them in the Secondary School Teachers Improvement Programme (SSTIP) scam where a substantial amount of money was misappropriated,” said Longwe.
The arrest of the two traces back to March when the university’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Peter Mwanza suspended his finance officer James Simkoko and recalled SSTIP coordinator Francis Saiti who was in the United States at the time.
This was after an allegation that about K2.5 million was deposited into Simkoko’s personal account, according to a letter dated 20th March, 2006, written by Mwanza.
Simkoko and Saiti were later arrested and are on bail. The university commissioned an audit to look into the matter.
University officials could not disclose the contents of the audit report, but a senior official said the findings show that K6,216,025.75 is missing.
Mzuzu University Assistant Registrar Chiyamiko Chinkwita Phiri said she could not comment on the arrest of the two officials as she also just heard about it.
“I just heard that the arrests were in connection with the audit report but I do not have first-hand information. You see, the issue was reported to police and it is they who can explain better,” she said.
Meanwhile, Longwe said police have managed to recover K2,594,585.00.
The police spokesman also said Hango and Chimungu have been charged with three counts: Theft by servant, forgery and uttering a false document.
They were given court bail on Tuesday.

Nyasaland, you have an issue with this university. May be add some fresh so that we should know what to contribute. Reuben Hango was my headmaster when I was doing my secondary school early 90s. I feel sorry for him. He was a good man who inspired me to be where I am today.

Maybe yes , maybe not. I dont know and never thot deeply about it.Ask Game , his home in Malawi is Chibavi near Mzokoto.

no man,i went to phwezi,actually i designed the homestead,(joke) am originally from that area mlowe to be exact,but born and grew up in lilongwe.nyasaland just misses his roots,he was at mzuzu university,he is very famous in chibavi for his dancing tactics after a few booze.he used to dance with a bottle of carlsburg on his head.

I was surprised as to why Nyasaland kept on bringing up the Mzuzu University scandals. So he is an alumin (sp) of MZUNI. Thats good Nyasaland and conglatulations for that big achievement. I am sorry if at one point i talked bad about MZUNI. If I am to say that I was also at Phwezi and I am "General Bala", is there anyone here who happen to know me?

That is open thinking and cant blame you. Last year, the Brazilian , Menezes was murdered by the British police in London underground for mistaken identity . Wrong interpretation of actual facts and vane imagination . No one knows anybody on this forum unless you are God Himself. You are simply using identity thinking.Negation.
