A controversial right-to-die bill returns to the House of Lords on Friday, as a poll showed three-quarters of people are in favour of changing the law so that the terminally ill can be allowed to die.


Of 1,770 respondents questioned in the YouGov survey for the Dignity in Dying group, 76 percent were in favour of assisted dying as long as safeguards were in place.

Lord Joffe's bill, assisted dying for the terminally ill, goes to the Lords for its second reading on Friday facing mounting opposition from doctors and religious groups.


A Royal College of Physicians poll showed 73 percent of its members are against any change in the law to allow physician-assisted suicide or euthanasia.

The leader of the Anglican Church, Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, is against the bill and is one of 81 speakers due to take part in the debate.

All the political parties are allowing a free vote on the issue and public opinion is split over the issue.

A poll in the Sunday Telegraph last weekend showed 65 percent of people agreed that if the proposed law change went ahead, "vulnerable people could feel under pressure to opt for suicide".

A third of respondents in Friday's poll described themselves as Church of England, Anglican or Episcopal, 9 percent were Roman Catholic and 40 percent said they were not religious.

Bill supporters say doctors should be able to prescribe drugs that a terminally ill person suffering terrible pain could take to end his or her own life.

A high profile "right to die" case was Diane Pretty, who died four years ago this week of motor neurone disease. She took her fight for the right to die to the European Court of Human Rights

Abre in one of his postings on an unrelated topic to this one said you live and are in Malawi at this present time.However some clues,the above being one of them,makes me believe that you are right here in the UK.Can you therefore confirm or deny as to whether you are in Malawi or the UK.Some issues will be resolved once your exact location is known,be honest pliz!

the link can be found on bbc online,i think pope is in malawi and have access to the world through internet,that makes him well connected.as for nyasaland he is got many sides to him,the dumb,dumber and the dumberer,then there is the smart nyasaland with an admirable split personality.one can swing like a pendullum regardless of where he is as long as they make sense.just my opinion.

Up to now I still can't take this new Nyasaland as the same as the original who started here as some Zimwale from kwa Cent or Chimoka. This is where I believe that there really is Identity Theft in this world cos there is no way anyone can convince me that these 2 Nyasalands (former & later) are the same, NO WAY JOSE!!!

Hold up Pope, you as one of them split personality guys you shoulda known that here in the USA mother's day was yesterday and this year father's day is june 18th so don't be acting up in here when I offer my best wishes to them fathers on that day again.


About Kamuzu, I ain't give rat's behind about who says what 'bout his birthday, I grew up respecting the guy and to my knowledge May 14th has been his official birthday. Damn how I miss going to Kamuzu Stadium and celebrate, ma Born-Free. I miss going ku rally, if you know what I mean?


You may not like him but hey, dude still has some diehards, I for one I love him, him as a person but not his party. We all have our different likings.

you love kamuzu because sananyongepo agogo ako,i respect the guy,he is a true son of malawi historically,but the man was a punk.imagin if you would ever be in america if your families breadwinner was forced into exile,or putting your family in a state of disorder,some people are realising now that one of their sister is a daughter of the kayombe guy who protected their mother when she was mbumba.

In those days when Kamuzu could use you against your rights!! The days when we could spend four weeks without classes just becoz we had to train for the tin pot dictator visit,the days when our lectuerers could miss over night,ohh how I miss the dreadful days when our young ladies could spend the whole day on a freezes.Those days when men could sing like women to please kamuzu or be fed to crocodiles.......the list goes.


I didnt know you are in the usa and you had that day on 14th,but tell me was it a black women day?

C'mon guys as I said we all have different likings. I for one was so into rally and ma born free stuff but tell you what, my parents were not for it and I realised about this later on cos they never showed it, the reason being it was affecting my studies, but honestly how did a normal teenager react when asked to skip school and spend the whole day at Clock Tower waiting for Kamuzu, it was fun for all, socializing and showing off mainly among girls, eating chips in brown bags stained with vinegar bought from the Fish & Chips restuarant right at Blantyre Bus Depot. You mean to tell me that you hated that stuff. I don't know man. I ain't saying the dude was a saint though.

Nostalgia has a funny way of blotting out the unpleasant bits of life. Plus of course it was a way of getting away from the tediousness of classroom attendance. An out-of school activity.


But, and I use the word sparringly, the idea of having to line the streets all day just to wave at some old, senile, magalomaniac for 10 seconds. was positively disgusting to me as it was an alien concept when I arrived in Malawi. Plus i hated the fact that i couldn't say bad things about him. Forget the fact that he tried to kill my parents. I almost sometimes find myself wishing that there was a hell that he could be placed in, but I guess that would be innadequate.
