A man in Dedza has cut off his genitals in an attempt to end his life after people poked fun at him for being HIV positive.
Dedza Police publicist Franklin Gausi said the man, Moses Ngoma, was—before he moved to Dedza—living in Kasungu but left after people in his area ridiculed him.
Gausi said Ngoma last week decided to attempt suicide after noting that people in the area he moved to also laughed at him for being HIV positive.
The police publicist said at first Ngoma stabbed himself in the abdomen but did not achieve his goal as the knife he used was not sharp enough.
“He then bought a sharper knife from a grocery shop at Bembeke Trading Centre and went into a nearby bush and slay himself in the neck but this too proved futile as the weapon could not take his life though it managed to prize through the Adam’s apple.
“It was only when he decided that cutting off his [genitals] would finish him off faster that a passer-by, Zamande Magombo, heard his cry and when he rushed into the bush, he found Ngoma lying in a pool of blood with his left testicle...beside him,” said Gausi.
Magombo reported the incident to Dedza Police who rushed to the scene and picked up the semi-conscious, motionless Ngoma’s body to Dedza District Hospital where he is now stabilising, said Gausi.
“We will charge him with attempt to commit suicide, contrary to Section 229 of the Penal Code,” he said.
Ngoma, 38, hails from Chibowoka Village in Chief Kaluluma’s area in Kasungu.
