STOP USING WORD DEBATE
Permalink Closed

I wonder whether what is happening here on this forum is debate or arguments? To me I feel, we argue than debate. Although, by definition these words go hand in hand  (almost similar) - To my understanding, after debate, pple will reach to a conclusion and shake hands. Whilst arguements almost always lead to a fight or pple stop talking each other.

The reason why am saying, we argue is the same reason we never reach decisive conclusions. If these 'debates' were done on an open ground, where we know who is who, I am  pretty sure, bwezi tikupatsana makofi everyday. This makes our debates to arguments. Therefore, stop using the word debate in relationship to what happens on this forum.

Debates and arguments are pretty much the same thing. They both lead to conclusions that might be unfavourable to either party. One person is probably right. And most importantly, they don't solve much...

I stand to be corrected but what's the objective of this forum? If it's about people trading barbs, which is very common, then we can not call this a debating forum at all. However, there are times when you can follow some line of arguments and bling, someone comes in with a razor barb. What would have been a debate degenerates into a fray of verbal abuse and name-calling.

The original idea of a debate was that there were two sides with prons and cons to a topic and someone would facilitate the arguments and the side which has the strongest arguments would win the day. However, in this age  where place (physical) is not as important for people to express opposing views, the moderation of such discussions becomes a bit tricky and no wonder nothing gets concluded out of some very interesting topics. Of-course it does not mean that there should be a conclusion to every topic but at least something ought to be shared and appreciated to the benefit of bloggers and visitors alike.
