K2m swindled at Finance Bank

Lilongwe Fiscal Police have arrested two Finance Bank workers for allegedly swindling the bank of more than K2 million.

According to Assistant Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent John Chiona-Banda, the two employees are Kondwani Chiwala, 22, a teller and 31-year-old Wales Phiri, an auditor.

The two were based at Finance Bank’s Lilongwe Branch.

Finance Bank Managing Director, Neil Nyirongo said the bank became suspicious after noticing some malpractices in accounting and called fiscal police who confirmed that there was indeed money that was systematically being siphoned from the bank.

“Apparently, the malpractice had been taking place for some time but it was only on the 28th December that we were sure as the two employees were taken by police,” said Nyirongo.

Chiona-Banda said Chiwala and Phiri conspired to steal money from the bank by unblocking one of the bank’s blocked accounts and were transferring money from the protected account to another that they opened in the bank.

“The two were withdrawing money from the account that they opened and by the time the fiscal police caught up with them, they had already withdrawn more than K2 million,” said Chiona-Banda.

Chiona-Banda suspected the two to have swindled more than the amount that has been discovered as police investigations were still underway.

Finance Bank Malawi was on May 19 last year closed for almost a month after Finance Minister Goodall Gondwe revoked the bank’s license because of breaches of banking and foreign currency regulations.

Nyirongo said the recent incident would not damage the reputation and image of the bank, as did the revoking of the license last year because the two incidents were not related.

“This incident is purely an operational problem while the other one had to do with forex rules and regulations of the Reserve Bank of Malawi, so the two are not related,” Nyirongo clarified.

Chiwala and Phiri, who are long time employees of the bank, are expected to appear at Lilongwe Magistrates’ Court today where they will be answering charges of conspiracy, fraudulent false accounting and theft by servant.

 



how can one be so stupid,syphoning money from the bank and wiring it to an account in the same bank.

Anybody can steal, but it takes a smart person to know how to cover their trail. Uwu nde umbuli, kulephera ndi kuba komwe.
OHH boy when i think of the picture of malawian jail. I dont think the petty K2million is worth it.

Yep, that's exactly what I was thinking too. Those jails? I think I might even know Wales... Sounds familiar...

This amount of money is equivalent to US $16000. This is hell lot of money here because if I am to buy reconditioned vehicles from Japan I can have not less than 5 of them and if I resell them I can recover that in just one sell plus profit. And you know what these guys will get away with it.

i think you are right they will get away with it,straight up nepotism,kho chiwala got the job because of some relation, he is just a kid at 22 thats why he was too thick to cover his tracks,finance bank almost got closed because of inside malpractices,they just recommend each other if there is a vacancy no wonder anyone gets the bank teller jobs,even commissionaires go behind that computer and open your account.

are you one of the dumbest people alive?or you are just being naive,these two knuckleheads didnt have an uphill battle to survive,they all had good jobs, for an average malawian its enough  to keep you just above the poverty line.if you look at the postings above,nobody is condemning them for stealing the money,its the inadequate amount of brain power,lack of planning which has resulted in them being caught.


its like pulling a heist in the reserve bank just to hide the money in one of its accounts.only thickheads are capable of doing that.

can Ankhaze,ice and karma tell me where i have insulted anyone on this issue.is asking someone whether he  or she is the dumbest an insult,or is calling someone naive an offending statement?is this the evidence that people on this forum are intellectually mismatched,next time look into the comment and understand the contents before jumping the Gun,i did not mean to insult anyone's intelligence.

Game although im new to this forum I know you are intelligent from what ive been reading so far,infact there are great minds on this forum. Dont try to play mind games with me Game, we all know that that wasn't a question, If you went a bit too far just admit it dont try to get yourself out in such a lame manner. In fact thats all water under the bridge, its no big deal.


Ankaze and ice, thanks i think we are seeing something that others haven't yet, have you noticed that this forum is turning into a BATTLEFIELD??? All people want to do is to show how intelligent they are by making someone look stupid, Is there no other way of bigging yourself up please people??? Trust me if anyone who is not malawian reads this forum they must think we are u bunch of savages,you complain about dress codes in photos but have you not thought of how our attitudes towards each other are representing us???I'm not against productive arguments but please relax.....

karma.this is what you wrote in your earlier posting which prompted me to ask you one simple question,the one you and your cohorts misinterprett to be an insult,for starters this was off topic because the people in question did not get away with stealing because they screwed up,so for you to come up with such a statement completely betrayed your intellectual maturity.it dont even fit into a constructive criticism category because its mere weak.
