Alfred,
The fact that "it is done in the USA or UK" is quite besides the point and is certianly not "the reason it should be done here".
Whether we like it or not the fact remains that there are people in Malawi and all over the world for whom sexual identity is not as straight forward as those whose intolerance has been voiced over this e-mail network would like. I know you would not be surprised to know that "it" is done here. What will also not surprise you is that the vitriol that spouts forth from many so-called christians is causing those fellow human beings untold suffering and is far from charitable. Who then is imposing their views on whom? The mark of a good democracy is how the majority treat their minorities. When people have a choice it is a free society. This society is far from free. I do not support this lobbying because they are gay but because they are a minority who wish to live their lives and contribute to the good of society - just like the rest of us - but are persecuted for daring not to conform to a warped and intolerant "norm".
I know this will not be a popular message in Malawi's secretive, suspicious and judgemental society but one day such attitudes will have to change. I will throw your quote back to you "..........and are known and valued by all"
Steve Morris,
Humanist/Atheist/Call me what you like ...a Least Square ...but by Malawi definitions certainly not a Christian

Off couse I know alot of people on the e-mail group that are doing wonderful work developing this country.  I have been around long enough and read Malawi historical heritage to know the limits, at least in this Country. The fact that it's done in USA or UK or wherever is no reason it should be done here.

I rarely agree with HE Robert Mugabe, but I certainly agree with him when he calls "homosexuals less than dogs" at least dogs know the opposite sex

Tommorrow, I will be presenting my counter-lobby to the same MPs.

We seem to be a wide variety of people that have been put together on this e-mail:  Religions, Agriculturalists, Justice, Econmics, Education, Civil Society, Gays and Lesbians, etc. - some of us may fall under more than one title, and maybe that is what brought us all together on this e-mail?

In my 9 years in Malawi, I have never heard so many Malawians be so outspoken on an issue.  I hope this same energy for advocacy will also extend itself to other important issues in our current system:
* Food and nutrition security
* Environment
* Economics
* Equality
* Etc.

We have a lot to work on in Malawi!  I hope that we can all work towards accepting each other and our different beliefs, religions and lifestyles and to continue to make Malawi a healthier, richer place to live despite our different choices in personal lifestyle.
