ABROAD OR HOME
Permalink Closed

I am a new member to this group but wanted to know whether after five years in a foreing country or whether you stayed back home, what has been the progress.

If none why dont you go back or travel. If there has been progress where ever you are,is it possible for you to share it with others so that they can benefit from it.

I am of the opinion that we now need to look at ourselves before we start pointing fingures.

Remmember that to everything there is need for what..............................................

Progress will depend on one's reasons for being here in the first place.  I think yours is a loaded question.  What is it exactly that you want to know?  Narrow your question down a little I think.

Just my two cents...kudos

Can you please clearly elaborate your question...as mamacita said..."you have a load of questions"  I don't really understand exactly what you are asking...

Well I can say this,It is all about what one has managed to achieve in life, wether being home or abroad, but as for me I can say I've been sucsessful both ways, because I've managed to achieve what I want being home and abroad ie school and carrier.

By what or whose standard are we going to measure progress

Come on now! Quit begging the question. We all know what this person wants to know. I will make it simple for you guys. Answer these questions!

Do you live from paycheck to paycheck?

Is your paycheck enough to cover your bills or you have to go to Payday Loans to make it through the month?

When you get your paycheck, are you able to put at least $200 in your savings account and still have enough for bread and bills?

Do you forget to pick up your check and have it sitting in the office for days, or may be till the next payday... and when you get it, you deposit the whole amount in your savings.

Have you invested in your children ie CDs.

Have you invested enough money and you are  at a point where money works for you and not you working for money?

That is what they are trying to say! So who is first?

Which was my point exactly Mr. Kunjanji.  The above are what YOU define as the standard of progress.  But for some people, progress would not necessarily be equated with money.  It might, for all we know, be the mere fact of leaving home to come to the western world.  Or even perhaps moving from a roommate situation to renting one's own apartment.  I hate to burst your bubble, but the fact of it remains that "progress" is too much of an abstract situation.  Unless the author (in this case the one who started this whole conversation) defines it for us, we are all going to have different ideas on what progress is.  It's not too much to ask that he specify exactly what he is seeking.  After all, people have different goals and objectives, various things they want to accomplish.  If we are going to generalize, perhaps then the question should be, in whatever your situation do you feel you have made progress?  And if you have, how did you attain it? That way, those that have made progress in their personal growth would also have access to advise him on what changes they have made in their world views, choice of friends, etc.

But I still ask, is the author looking for help with financial progress (which is what you Mr. Kunjanji are suggesting)? Or perhaps he wants to know about personal maturity and growth (which is also progress in itself and the greater progress of the two)

It seems to me Mr. Kunjanji, you seem to have some idea on financial progressPerhaps I should ask you what you yourself have done to make some financial progress.  I bet it is quite impressive.  So what say you?

Just my two cents...kudos

Interesting question. As some of my collegues on the forum have rightly suggested, "progress" is subjective. We all have different ideas of what progress means to us and there are different standards against which "progress" is measured i.e you can measure it against Malawian living standards or you can measure it against the American standards. This in itself further complicates our definition of progress. All in all, I can say that most people seem to be content with the life they are living here and if this by itself is an indicator of progress, then I can say they are happy campers. The fact that two people have almost the same assets and achievements does not necessarily mean that both consider that they have reached their objectives in life. While it might be an overachievement of one, the other might consider it an underachievement based on what goals he/she has set for him/herself in life. Some want to make enough money to relocate back home while some never want to set foot in Nyasaland again. Some are going to college and for them that is progress. Some got a chance to drive when they went abroad and for them that is progress. It all depends on the perspective of the individial.

However when you are in a foreign land, time loses its relevance. Years are fast creeping by and we should start accounting our achievements based on our time here.

How do you do Mamacita? Thank you for asking, what progress I have attained thus far. I do not talk about my progress in life.  I let people judge coz it is easy to see, and I let people think what they want. All I going to say is am an Entrepreneur in both Malawi and America. If you want to visit our website please feel free! www.resrealtors.com No personal emails or calls please I only take business calls.

Thank you and I will not revisit this subject.

It depends on what you mean by progress. My measurement is whether I can do today what I could not do yesterday, or sametime last year.

Obviously this would vary with particular item being measured. This measure will see no boundaries.

The problem wit ur question is that it is ambigous. Do you mean material, spiritual or emotional progress?

A material example would be: If you hitched rides everyday coz you had no car of your own but you don't now then that is progress. However this can't be progress if buying the new car means you can't afford to pay your rent on time or not at all.

As to standard of measurement, everyone must have their own. Because even in Malawi the measure is not the same.

I will go now before I write a whole essay.

Now Kunjanji, too bad that you don't want to revisit the issue.  How else does little mama here go about asking how she too can make it??   But seriously, hoping that business is going great for you!

Has Chilungamobasi been somewhat satisfied with people's suggestions?  There hasn't been any feedback.  Still there?

...kudos
