I ADMIRE THE INGENUITY OF NGWAZI'S OBSERVATION. GREED IS A PITIFUL THING IN MALAWI. AFRICA. ALTHOUGH IT IS GREED THAT HAS MADE THE WEST RICH. AT LEAST ITS COLLECTIVE GREED. THEY STEAL TO ENRICH THEIR SOCIETIES AND NOT INDIVIDUAL LEADERS. ALL THAT MONEY MULUZI HAS STASHED AWAY IN FOREIGN BANK ACCOUNTS WOULD HAVE GONE A LONG WAY IF ONLY IT WAS INVESTED LOCALLY. THAT IS ONE OF THE FEW POSITIVE LEGACIES OF KAMUZU.

THE ONLY WAY. AND I MEAN THE ONLY WAY FOR MALAWI AND INDEED AFRICA TO TACKLE CORRUPTION IS TO HAVE AN ACCOUNTABLE BODY THAT IS TOTALLY INDEPENDENT OF THE POLITICAL ESTABLISHMENT. ALTHOUGH I DO NOT AGREE WITH THE IMPEACHMENT OF BINGU. AT LEAST NOT YET, THE FACT THAT IT WAS BROUGHT INTO EFFECT SHOWS THAT THERE IS A HEALTHY OPPOSITION IN POWER. UNFORTUNATELY, THE IMPEACHMENT IS BROUGHT ABOUT FROM A VINDICTIVE SOURCE (OF POLITICAL SCUMBAGS) AND THAT SORT OF UNDERMINES ITS CREDIBILITY. I'LL BE A LOT HAPPIER IF IT WAS BROUGHT ABOUT BY THE COMMON CITIZENS OF MALAWI.

Even the president can make a wrong decision.Thats when democracy steps in and the people have the power . We have leaders that can listen to the people and make adjustments. In my view thats a positive thing.

Imagine if any of malawians had a say on the purchase of  Rolls Royce during Kamuzu's term, they would have ended up dead or in prison.

I like to look at the positive side of a situation.

Sepusepu,

the point is,he should not have found himself in that position as an economist turned President of an impoverished african country. In my earlier posting I said Malawi was the 9th poorest nation, actually I was wrong  and I apologise for that,Malawi is number 4 on the list of poorest nations after East Timor,Somalia and Sierra Leone in that order and surprise surprise, all the other countries have been in civil wars  and Malawi has not  which theoretically or practically means all things being equal,we are worse than them!!!.

The President and the Finance Minister are all  high grade economists,in fact they are both Doctors in this field, one of the basic principles  in economics is called OPPORTUNITY COST,that is an alternative forgone, you can either have A or you can have B but not both. Our highly qualified economists, leaders in the fourth poorest nations  following the principle of opportunity cost  then decide to go for such P.Diddy opulence when your relatives and mine are starving, whats the positives from that?Did they had to wait for the "uneducated man" to remind them of their "folly" before they had to change their mind?

Dont lie that we have leaders that listen to people,it still goes back to the point that if they did then they should not have found themselves in the situation because definitely someone told them not to go for such an expense. We should not compare what happened under Kamuzu to whats happening now, irrelevant is the word.We have leaders who are ready to enjoy by getting for themselves luxurious items at the expense of the suffering Malawian, thats what this sorry saga has shown.Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely indeed.

I know Maybach 65 is an expensive car but surely its not the sixth expensive car in the world perhaps maybach 62 or 57 is but definetely not 65.

You keep on saying that he shouldnt have made such a decision but he did. I am talking about after the decision was made. The reaction of the people made them give up the maybach. Thanks for the Econs 201 Refresher course.

Sepusepu,

I dont want to believe that you fell for this con, politicians try to "play"around with the minds of the "gullible" which I believe you are not.Politicians have a knack of letting people think that they have"listened"just to gain cheap political mileage. The real truth as to why he changed his mind is that he realised that  with parliament in session, this could be used as another reason to impeach him,how could he go and spend close to a quarter of a billion kwacha just to buy luxury motors like the maybach when people are suffering?I have said a quarter of a billion kwacha because apparently he had put in an order for three(3)maybachs,one for himself, one for his wife and the one on standby at the State House(source:Daily Times,Wednesday 15 June 2005,story written by Anthony Kasunda)

So the decision that was made to rescind this earlier madness should not be seen as a triumph for democracy but rather the "flight of the weak".If the opposition MPs had not talked about including it as another reason to impeach him then I doubt it if at all he was going to change his mind.By the way, that mere act of "listening"to the people has costed the country the initial deposit on the Maybach 62,$180000(source:IRIN,16 June 2005),what a waste of  taxpayers money!!!.

So you see my point now,the original decision to go for such opulence was wrong,he should not have even thought about it and the decision made to reverse that idea was not done in good faith and not this"I have listened"crap, to make matters worse the taxpayer has had to pay heavily for that reversal. He was wrong then and he is wrong now, lots of money spent on cancellation of the order and he is now looking for a cheaper alternative, where was this thinking at first?:weirdface

Ngwazi

It seems that you have political connections in MW or at least some family member who is probably an MP or maybe someone in the previous govt. Mmmm... I might be wrong.

But anyway I totally agree. And this is not a Malawian problem only. It is an African one. The fact that we give our political leader less accountability makes them take us for granted. The Maybach should have been unthinkable. And yes, it is an impeachable offence. The fact he even brought it up is a travesty in itself. And even though is was cold feet that got him to withdraw it still shows that the opposition did their job.

My heart bleeds to watch irresponsible African leaders throwing away the countries meagre resourses on luxuries we can hardly afford. How far can $180,000 go in term of fertilizer or anti-retoviral drugs or books for the universities? And we wonder why they call us corrupt.

Hei, I thought he was supposed to be an economist.

He is an economist alright but he is abusing himself by abusing his position. As  a  leader, he should not even have entertained a notion of getting anything that expensive...........what makes it worse is the fact that he knew better but went ahead and announced that he was buying it. Believe you me, if there had been  no strong opposition, he would have gladlly purchased that vehicle without second thoughts.......MMASO MULI MBEEE!!!!!!!!!!

HE SHOULD ALWAYS BE ON HIS SENSES ON MATTERS OF ECONOMY!!!!!!!!! I BELIEVE WE ALL KNOW WHY?!!!!!!!  DAMN!!!!
