Welcome to the forum, you have asked a very good question,a question that is stimulating intellectually more especially because it touches the very core of the future for us the youth but unfortunately mwafunsa ndi kudziyankhanso nokha, next time you put a question across please await responses from others first before you can come in,learn the art from the masters more especially my sista,Lady B.
Anyway,I will pretend kuti sunaziyankhe wekha and I will attempt to deal with your question. I personally believe the future for mechanical engineering graduates in Malawi is not promising as you believe. When we say the future is promising,we look at the prospects of getting a job within a resonable time of coming out of college(technical or Poly),the salaries one will command in a such a job and expected progression in that job and unfortunately it does not look promising as you think.
Malawi has had many engineering firms like B&C fold up whilst the intake at the Polytechnic or the other technical colleges has increased or remained the same. This is creating an imbalance in the relevant field since a lot more people are chasing a few jobs which in return is causing the few companies still left in the field to offer wages and salaries that do not reflect the time spent at the Poly. Most of the remaining companies as well are hiring those that have come out of the technical colleges at the expense of Polytechic graduates because they know most of the times the skills are more or less the same but for less money, competition is high
Because people are not getting jobs in this field, most of them are getting retrained in a different field like marketing and they end up getting jobs in this field of marketing which in turn has a negative impact on the skills of their original field, mechanical engineering, this again makes them less attractive to employers when a vacancy for a mechanical engineering graduate comes up.But then they are doing all this in the name of survival and its sad that the system has allowed many of our graduates to rot.
The education system of our country is geared at churning out employees and not employers and once they can't get a job or they dont have money,it is a problem for them,no wonder the future is not promising for those in this field and I would advise those that intend to go into this field that a mind is a terrible thing to waste and more especially when its an intelligent one,so think carefully, look atother courses like medicine, law or accounting.

Lady B,
Alongosi pamenepa tu mwapupuluma,I actually meant it as a complement and I would say muwelengenso posting imene ija ndipo muwona kuti sindinakuneneni, sindingakupangeni chipongwe alongosi. But in case you missed it and to save you time from going back to the posting, here it is (the art I am talking about is the art of postings and not anything else, read and stop on the "dots"then continue, mtima uli mmalo"

You would think that when somebody comes up with wise questions people would retaliate with intelligent answers. But sadly they don't.
Anyway to get back to this topic. I think Malawi should sit back and really look into this, because a country to be successful it needs engineers. Engineering runs a country's economy. But this is not the case, Malawi does not recognise that, so sad. The blame is just not on the government its mainly on the Malawian engineers, I think we are so stupid, we graduate with an eye out for somebody to employe us. This kind of thinking is bad, with the current situation Malawi is in [few industries]. Rather, when we graduate, we should be thinking of entreprenuership. In this way by starting SMEs [small and medium enterprises] we could really be fixing a lot of problems present and long term for Malawi. But to achieve this we need the help of government and the learning institutions, so that students should be well equiped with the necessary skills and tools to go out there and make it. Its a big problem that needs to be resolved, students should graduate with the mentality of offering employment and not seeking employment.
THE ANSWER TO THE ABOVE QUESTION IS NO. AT LEAST NOT AT THE MOMENT. THINGS MIGHT CHANGE, YES, BUT....
FOR INDUSTRY TO GROW OR EVEN SURVIVE THERE HAS TO BE A DEMAND FOR IT. CAPITAL TO FUND IT AND A MARKET TO SELL IT TO. SADLY, THERE ISN'T ONE IN MALAWI THAT IS SUBSTNATIAL. THAT SAID IT SHOULD NOT STOP THE INDIVIDUAL FROM SEEKING INGENIOUS WAYS TO ORGANISE AND IMPROVE MALAWI'S INFRASTRUCTURE. THERE IS A LOT THAT CAN BE DONE TO HELP THE AGRICULTURAL SECTOR IN TERMS OF IRRIGATION (WHICH IS SOMETHING MALAWI NEEDS MORE THAN ANYTHING). WE DON'T NEED HIGH-TECH TO IMPROVE THAT JUST INGENUITY. SEVERAL OTHER SECTORS CAN MAKE USE OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING...
SOMEONE ONCE SAID SOMETHING ABOUT AFRICA GOING AHEAD WITH ITS OWN MODERNITY THAT FITS WITH ITS CULTURAL AND ECONOMICAL NEEDS... WAIT A MINUTE, I SAID THAT...
