FUNNY THING. THAT QUOTE IS ALSO ATTRIBUTED TO OSCAR WILDE (?)
IT BOILS DOWN TO RATIONALISATION.
FOR THOSE WHO UTILISE THEIR MINDS. LATERALLY. RATIONALLY. PERHAPS DISPASSIONATELY HAVE THE ABILITY; IN A SORT OF MACHIAVELLAN WAY, TO SEE LIFE AS SUCH. CAN FACE CHALLENGES AND SOLVE ISSUES PRACTICALLY.
ON THE OTHER HAND, THOSE WHO RESORT TO EMOTIONAL INTERPRETATIONS TEND TO; OR ARE MORE LIKELY TO VIEW LIFE THAT WAY TOO. FULL OF TRAGEDY, SUFFERING, INEQUALITIES ETC.
I BELIEVE IT IS ESSENTIAL TO HAVE A REASONABLE BALANCE OF BOTH. TRAGEDY PRODUCES ART, MUSIC (GOOD MUSIC THAT IS) POETRY. PRACTICALITY IS WHERE SCIENCE LIES. DEVOID OF HUMAN EMOTIONS AND ETHICS. I.E. ATOMS AND CHEMICALS AND VIRUSES DON'T CARE WHETHER ONE IS RICH, POOR, BLACK OR WHITE; THEY JUST DO WHAT THEY DO.
HAPPINESS IS NOT PLEASURE, IT IS MOSTLY VICTORY (AT LEAST FOR ME). PLEASURE IS SHORT LIVED. E.G. BEING TOTALLY WASTED. OR HAVING AN ORGASM. OR DRIVING A FAST CAR.
HAPPINESS IS MORE COMPLEX. BEING IN THE STATE OF TOTAL SATISFACTION USUALLY AFTER A TRIAL. PASSING A HARD EXAM. CLIMBING A MOUNTAIN. WINNING A GAME. IT IS MORE THAN JUST PLEASURE, IT IS WINNING TOO. OVERCOMMING. FEELING IN LOVE WITH SOMEONE AND KNOWING THEY FEEL THE SAME.
i agree with what you have just said i have always said Happiness is the main initiator of good feeling. Intensity of good feeling is proportional to will to live. It is a feeling that we associate with will to live. Happiness as a general rule comes from doing/sensing/having what you want. This comes in forms such as self satisfaction from achievement for example. However since human society is so inhibiting, we have invented artificially induced happiness from entertainment, based on stimulating the senses. For example music and going out to the cinema or clubbing. Life is such a frustrating contradiction: it seeks that which it cannot find and strives for that which it cannot have. No wonder it ends up with nothing.
First, I dont think Im clear on what you meant by "main initiator of good feeling". Also, happiness is proportional to good will seems a bit odd. If you have ever seen the princess bride, revenge fuels the will to live. Happiness may well be correlated to a will to live, but surely it they are not contingent upon eachother in strong enough a way to call them "proportional". Next, the satisfaction of desires is interesting. However, what are we to say for the desireless person. Many people ie monks seem happier than anyone, yet they (allegdly) do not desire. Just some quick thoughts, to some degree I agree with what you have to say.
