gone are the days when daughters used to clean and cook like their mothers, now they drink like their fathers, and sometimes even more!!!! Do you concur?

I am not too sure about the question. Is smacks a lot of the sterotype I have of Malawian parents who all were No.1 in class.


The world has moved on so has the traditional allocation of roles. I am not too sure about the drinking. I believe women have always been drinking like men. In our Malawian culture, especially in the towns, female drinking was always associated with 'uhule'. As such most women would hide the fact that they partake of the intoxicating stuff.


Enter my village. It was a totally different ball game. Women used to drink on the same level as men. I can say they handled the stuff better too. I remember this one time we went to the village and one of the young men in the village had just built a house. The women brew some thobwa and wamasese as a sort of donation to the young man. The idea was that people would help in thatching the house up and kumata ndi kuzira(plastering the walls and floor with mud). In return, the young man offered the drink o evryone who helped in finishing up the house.


We children, were given the thobwa while the grown ups had the wamasese. This is when I first saw women drinking. I don't mean sips. From my memory of that day and of many trips after, women were drinking as much as the men. So women drinking as much as men is not necessarily a new phenomenon. May be they are just more open about it than they were before.

And women drinking as much as men is a bad thing? Doesn't that make them a lot much easier to have sex with them when they lose their inhibitions? Surely that cannot be a bad thing?

Well, when Jesus stopped the crowd from stoning Mary Magdalene, that didn't make him a prostitute did it? You see I have been trying in vain to make people understand that homophobia is THE evil, not homosexuality. It's a shame that my efforts have been misconscrued.


Someone I knew was severely assaulted because some characters thought that he was gay, he wasn't. I don't believe in religion and I know how people can use it to justify hatred.


Confucius once said that resentment was eating poison and waiting for the other person to die.

I see that you do a lot of reading, That's good and one can also see that you have done or you are studying philosophy, linguistics or something like that [I am saying this by looking at your opinions and posts]. We understand what you are saying, but am sorry, you can not convince us to think the way you do. Some of us like to look and accept things the way they really are in life and the way we were brought up and our experiences. If you are going to believe in the teachings and ideas of all those philosophers [living and dead] then do you. Some of us maybe we weren't cut out for all that Confucius altruism way of thinking.

It is a breath of fresh air when someone who doesn't agree with you, instead of insulting you states his opposition with such flair, honesty and conviction. I admire that.


True upbringing and experiences go a long way to define how people act and think towards their peers. That explains the antipathy that I get when I try to reason with people. It's just that I see so conflict and negativity in this forum. Everyone abusing each other and saying quite unpleasant things about our fellow countrymen. There is a serious lack of positve sentiment...


I hope things change for the better but maybe I'm being naive and ignorantly optimistic!
