As you may be aware, the election campaigns in the UK are in full swing, and at the heart of the political circus is a headline involving a Malawian family seeking asylum.
I've read the stories surrounding their case, but I'm not convinced the grounds for the application for asylum are sufficient to convince the authorities here to let them stay.
Would be interested to hear your opinions on their story. I've attached a couple of articles to give you a bit of background to the story.
I wish Mrs Vera Kachepa and her children all the best as they fight their immigration battle to stay in the Uk,lets be honest we all want a cushy life, earning a few dollars and pounds where ever we are but the reasons given for their asylum application are not only laughable but stupid especially in these times.Every normal reasoning Malawian will agree with me that what they call the "powerful" Banda family "that might kill her and her kids"if she is deported back to Malawi stopped existing 11 years ago, actually they never existed at all.Malawians do remember very well that rather than the Banda clan being feared it was the Tembo/Kadzamira clan that one had to watch out and avoid crossing their paths and not the "royal family"in Area 15,so whats she on about?Mrs Kachepa is not running away from anything worth claiming asylum for,the simple truth is that just like many of us here in the diaspora, she is an economic refuge, she does not want to go back to malawi because kulibe chochita kumudzi kuja if you dont have a name, you have to be mwana wa uje or a relative of those politicians/rich guys to get anywhere, for that I dont fault her but her lie is not foolproof, its not a concrete that cannot be easily broken, she should have come up with a better lie bearing in mind Kamuzau and his cronies left the power stage long time ago to the point that my young brother who is now 11 years keeps pestering me to tell him stories about Kamuzu and Mtunthama days(for those of us who grew up in Ls),samamudziwa Kamuzu and here in 2005 someone claims to be running away from Bandas family nkhani yake yolandana mamuna and funny enough its not like she is the one who got the man,no,the man actually left her and married into Dr Bandas family, now I might be wrong and I stand to be corrected, who has more reason(s)to kill the other?wosiyidwa(wolandidwa)or the new woman/wife?why would the new wife plan to kill her when she already has the prize?the prize that she would genuinely love to have it back?come on people its time we got real
as said I wish her all the luck in her quest to remain in the UK but she needs to learn that ukamamunamiza mzungu you need a story that can not be easily be torn apart, anthuwa they are very clever, when they are questioning you nkhani ya immigration they will give you a long rope to hang yourself mwansangansanga.

The Banda regime is well and truly over, and if anyone is to be attacked by 'Banda's family' (whoever they may be) for shacking up with Banda's neice, it should be the husband and not the wife. She is the innocent one in the equation, and I don't think the reasons she has given would stand up well in a Malawian court. However, she has received immense support here from her town and some politicians (her community held a night vigil and protests to let the family stay, etc), so she might win the case to stay as part of the political propaganda. Anyway, lets hope the outcome is a good one, whatever the decision turns out to be.
guys this woman has a family to look after and we all know how hard other people find it to raise a family back home.if she can fight the uphill battle and make ends meet in England then she gotta do what she gotta do.90% of foreigners malawians in particular lie to get stay in these countries,so she needs all the support she can get than a finger pointing at her.
and it looks like she has the support of the whole community even the labour mp for her area.and with the publicity she is getting i think her case will soon be withdrawn,i wish her all the best.

game,
as said in my earlier posting,I wish Mrs Kachepa and her family all the success as they fight to remain in the Uk but I also wish she could have come up with a better lie that can not be easily dissected.Lying about the Banda family in these times cannot hold water and unfortunately for her,the story she presented has already been crushed by an expert witness who ruled that she was not in danger, what if this witness comes from malawi and therefore able to explain the going ins and out of malawi?I know a Malawian guy who claimed asylum in the uk and was given and the reasons he gave for such a claim were in a way that they could not be dispelled easily without having an official from either the British immigration or the British embassy in Lilongwe go and visit the area, this was at the peak of the rivarly between the NDA and the UDF,thats what she could have done.
Anyway mwayi ndiwosiyana, she might be given, she might not, dont get carried away with the support she is getting from politicians ,remember the Schiavo issue in Florida,President Bush even had to sign an emergency bill to help the pro-lifers but the courts ruled otherwise.I wish her all the best

Game,
I don't think anyone is pointing fingers here. All that is being said is that the reasoning behind her asylum claim may not hold water in a court, especially if they start digging around in Malawi as Ngwazi said. I hope they let them stay for the sake of her kids, cos Malawi can be quite tough, especially when trying to raise four kids on your own.
The fact of the matter is that Malawians are notorious amongst immigration departments accross the world for "overstaying thier welcome". The Malawian community, especially in UK, seems to accept this culture of staying in england illegally. There are those who come here claiming to want to study. They get student visas then dont even go to school, they dont even register themselves at their local LearnDirect centre at least. We have to learn to help our selves. Most of these people are making **** money working **** jobs but dont even strive to better themselves. How do you expect Malawi to become a better place if its own people refuse to go back and build it. Granted, life in Malawi is hard but I believe that some of you are making it sound a lot harder than it seems. For crying out loud its not the DRC or Rwanda or Sierra Leone. There is still hope. So my advice to the students out there is that once your degree course is over and you have gotten the experience you need, GO HOME. Help your country develop, because if you dont who will.
As for this woman and her family... its sad to say but they have overstayed their welcome. Upon further examination it seems that this woman and her family made little effort to sort out thier status in the UK until the time was up. There is this culture of fear that if you go enquire at the immigration office, they will send you home. A lot of Malawians are afraid of nothing. If we continue to outstay our welcome we are ruining it for others! Malawians learn to renew your visas! Let go of the dodgy black-market style visas.
