Malawian societies are sensitive of different kinds of homosexual practice, including those between consenting adults, but traditionally find them unacceptable precisely because of the cultural teachings on what is fitting in sexual relationships.
Is the criticism of gay and lesbian Malawians intolerant, uncritical, primitive, provoking violence? Well, as a victim of societal discrimination and a gay rights crusader I feel that it is my duty to speak out against the discrimination and silent persecution of homosexuals in Malawi, and if this shall bring pain to traditional leaders and fundamental Christians it's not my intention.
I would like to affirm that it is wrong to assume that Jesus said something recorded about human sexuality that most traditional leaders and Christians in Malawi normally base their argument from. I believe the Malawian society is unaware that evolution has brought the concept of a fixed nature into question, and that anatomical variability and adaptation is the major principle in all living things today. Malawian traditional leaders have a very wrong impression that by accepting any same-sex relations the traditional domination of men over women shall be altered. They forget that sex in today’s world is accepted as for pleasure as well as for procreation. They have a very outdated impression because they always think that a same-sex relationship is just men behaving badly, and not an inherent and morally neutral attribute of some people's inborn nature.
Malawian traditional leaders have wrongly linked homosexuality with adultery, fornication, incest, bestiality and pedophilia, all sins which are 'willful suppressions of the obvious truth about God and God's design in the natural world'.
LESBIAN AND GAY MOVEMENT OF MALAWI [LGMM]
INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL OBSERVATIONS
1. LGMM has around 2000 registered foreign-based Malawian crusaders in South Africa, the United States, and the United Kingdom and over 1000 inside Malawi.
LGMM aims are -
ü To encourage fellowship, friendship and support among individual lesbian and gay Malawians through crusades, study and action, wherever possible in local groups, and especially to support those lesbian and gay Malawians who are subject to discrimination and persecution.
ü To pressure the Malawi government through the National Assembly and Traditional Leaders to re-examine the general understanding of human sexuality, and to work for a positive acceptance of lesbian and gay relationships within the framework of the Statement of Conviction…so that all homosexuals may be able to live without fear of rejection or recrimination, and that lesbian and gay Malawians may be able to contribute fully to the socio-economic development of their country.
ü To encourage members to witness to their experience within the lesbian and gay community, and to witness to their convictions about human sexuality within the Malawian societies.
ü To maintain and strengthen links with other lesbian and gay groups, around the world.
2. LGMM's interest in this crusade is to protect from discrimination not only lesbians and gays, but all who support our Statement of Conviction whatever may be their own sexual orientation -
Statement of Conviction
"It is the conviction of the members of the Lesbian and Gay Movement of Malawi (LGMM) that human sexuality in all its richness is a gift of God gladly to be accepted, enjoyed and honored as a way of both expressing and growing in love, in accordance with the life and teaching of Jesus Christ. Therefore it is the LGMM conviction that it is entirely compatible with the Christian faith not only to love another person of the same sex but also to express that love fully in a personal sexual relationship."
3. LGMM also attach the highest importance to the rights conferred on all individuals by Articles 8, 9 and 10 of the Geneva Convention (Schedule 1 to the Human Rights Act, 1998), while noting the limitations expressed therein. At some points these individual rights appear to be imperilled by the current proposals.
4. LGMM welcome generally the new protections which will be given by the intended legislation to lesbian and gay individuals at or seeking work, not least as part of the wider movement to establish full equality in our society as between homosexuals and heterosexuals. But LGMM has concerns over the proposed treatment of "religion, tradition or belief", and over the special exemptions to be permitted to churches and societies and other organizations based on religion or belief.
LGMM shall stress the protection against discrimination for homosexuals (gays and lesbians), and for those whose religious beliefs support them (as does our Statement of Conviction) are among the primary purposes of the Directive.
Basic Concepts and Definitions
LGMM has notes that there is an "Indirect discrimination" for homosexuals in Malawi and LGMM believe there should be an anti-discrimination law for homosexuals.
Sexual Orientation
This is the first of the two fields for non-discrimination with which LGMM is concerned. Definition of "sexual orientation”. LGMM think it preferable to leave the term undefined. LGMM is also against any proposal by the Malawi Constitution to exclude from protection those alleged to have had unlawful sex. It needs stressing that the law on sexual offences still incorporates discrimination between same-sex and different-sex conduct. It is urgent that it should be modernized and rendered non-discriminatory. But even when those changes have been made, there will be a core of workers convicted in the past under an unequal law whose rights deserve protection. Of course we agree that there are other ways of protecting the public against e.g. paedophilia, and that no unlawful conduct exception should be included. Meanwhile we believe that no court anywhere has so far defined "sexual orientation" as including paedophilia.
* LGMM wishes to see public policy uphold and sustain life-time, faithful same-sex partnerships, and therefore hope that a civil partnerships law will be enacted as soon as possible.
Religion or Belief
There is neither definition of either term nor in the rest of Malawian constitution for religion or belief. The Government should not itself apparently propose such a definition, and this is wise, because if it did the legislation could be viewed as undermining human rights.
The LGMM still speculates as to the core reasons why and how did the National Assembly propose to make clear that “belief” has to be limited only to “political belief” and to “religious belief?” These limitations are discriminatory and risky hence in view of its complications LGMM considers that “belief” should have the widest possible interpretation in the constitution of the Republic. "Political belief" for instance, unless this term is restricted, it includes belief in favor of (or against) a specific public policy, as well as party political beliefs. Yet members of each category to be protected are likely to feel strongly about public policy issues related to their own special characteristics or circumstances. Thus followers of the Roman Catholic Church in Lilongwe might campaign to tighten the abortion laws, or members of Anglican Church in Blantyre might disestablish their Church from an internationally recognized statute. The Civil Servants at Capital Hill might lobby for improved salary structure .The University lectures within UNIMA might campaign for higher pension rights and duty allowances. Gay and lesbian people might lobby for a civil partnership law or changes in the criminal law within the Malawi Constitution. All these beliefs are "political" in the ordinary sense of the word. Yet it would be absurd to permit the individuals concerned to be discriminated against not because of what they were, but because of what they said and did in relation to relevant areas of public policy. LGMM therefore suggests instead that if the Malawi Government is determined to take positive route it should include provisions clearly defining what is, and what is not, "political" (i.e. justifying exclusion from protection). We offer two ideas -
1. "Political belief" means support for, or opposition to, specific political systems, political principles or political parties"
2. "Notwithstanding any other provisions in these Regulations, it shall be unlawful to discriminate against any person on the grounds of any belief held or expressed by him which is founded on, or directly related to, his age, disability, religion or sexual orientation". Both these provisions should be included.
LGMM know that sexuality is hard-wired into our genes, so what scripture can then help us with is how we can best handle our given sexuality in a way that best honors human integrity, honesty and faithfulness. Sadly, many will hide behind the authority of the Bible to vent some very homophobic statements.
Radical Faith and social justice cannot be separated - Christians must be equipped to engage with contemporary theological, political and social issues.
Challenging Thinking through and questioning our STATUS ensures that it remains alive and dynamic.
ONE THING THAT I HATE ABOUT GAY PEOPLE IS HOW THEY ALWAYS LIKE TO PORTRAY THEMSELVES
AS VICTIMS AND HOW WHEN EVER THEIR IN A CROWD THEY ALWAYS WANT THE WHOLE WORLD TO KNOW ABOUT THERE SEXUALITY.
TO BE HONEST WITH YOU BRAV(SWEET HEART, WHAT EVER YOU WANT TO BE CALLED)THERE ARE ALOT OF OTHER IMPORTANT ISSUES ONE WOULD DEVOLT THERE ENERGY AND TIME TO, THAN GAY RIGHTS ISSUES IN MALAWI. LIKE HELPING OUR PEOPLE BACK HOME LOSING THERE LIFES EVERY DAY FROM AIDS, HUNGER....... LIST IS ENDLESS. GET A LIFE.
READING YOURE POSTING JUST REMINDED ME ABOUT THAT GAY DUDE FROM MALAWI, DOING TIME IN THE UK FOR SPREADING HIV TO THREE GIRLS, ONE AS YOUNG AS 15.
AM NOT HOMOPHOBIC COZ AS A CHRISTIAN, I HAVE LOVE FOR ALL SINNERS, JESUS DIED FOR YOU GEE.
AM PRAYING FOR YOU BRAV. WE NEED TO GET THAT DEMON OUT OF YOU....
not is homosexuality wrong, it is disgusting. so if your intention was to open our minds, you are little to late, Homosexuality is wrong, don't corrupt Malawians with your idealistic beliefs. the anus is for one thing and one thing only and that is to pass metabolic waste from the body. and that has nothing to do with religion or tradition
I'm no homophobe, but I don't support it either. western civilisation has had a tremendous influence in Malawi. It has changed almost every aspect of Malawian life, from fashion to music among many others.Some for the better and others for the worst. I for one, am a big fan of hiphop. However, western culture has also lead to the destruction of Malawian culture. Although there are some tribal practices that are not as useful, we should still try our best to preserve some of the more useful values they instill upon us. Alot of which allow me to excell in such a society as diverse and competitive as the US. Most importantly, keeping the union between two individuals sacrid. When we say "banja", thats what it is,stictly the union between a man and a woman. Whether it's fair on you or not, a spade is a spade. Why do you seek the support of other countries to impose their values on us? because you know Malawians as a majority reject it. It may not be the way it is in the west, but that's what makes us unique in a world where nations lack that sense of pride and history.
Secondly, the design of both the male and female sexual organs should make it obvious. Male=penis, female=vagina. Now I mean this in it's most mature sense. Vagina, curved inwards as to escort the penis to the neccessary area.The penis (protruding outside of the body) as to impell inside vagina so it can deliver. Don't get any funny ideas, I'm purposely Illustating this to show you the mechanics behind this. It doesn't get any simpler than that. And I know alotta gay peeps contend that alot of other organs can accomodate the penis, but that gives rise to a whole other topic. So don't go there

I really dont know what to say to this. This is just so sad to me. I never thought I would see the day when a Malawian would stoop this low. I guess never say never the devil is everywhere these days including our beloved country. All I can say is there is a great book out there and it is called the Bible i suggest you take time and read it becuase this world is coming to an end and we see the signs every single day. I suggest that you start with Matthew 24 read the whole chapter and then read the rest of the Bible.
May the Lord have Mercy on our Country Malawi

lgmm2005(or should we call you Elube?),
whatever you say,no matter how much you try to "chocolate"the idea,no matter what you or your friends think(or do!),homosexuality is wrong.Those that have written before me have already made you aware that this behaviour is unacceptable and much as we appreciate that it happens in the western world(though most people are still in the closet even in the west)christianity condemns it and I being not only a christian but a malawian as well find it very very distateful.I have read the bible countless times and nowhere does it say homosexuality is acceptable,rather the bible condemns this behaviour and goes further to lay down the punishments(Leviticus 20 v13,1 Corinthians 6 v 9).
Thanks to game for reminding lgmm2005 that God created Adam and Eve and not Adam and Steve.

igmm2005 This is unbelieveble this guy wants our MPS to deliberate on Gay right in Parliament and missuse the meager resources our little country has. Our country is in a crisis situation right now as we have huge socially conscience battles that we need to be engaged in for example the scourge of AIDS, Health crisis, iliteracy, poverty, just to mention a few.
I really want to write alot here but i'm holding back. I cannot make an objective statement on this issue because i have to admit that i am homophobic particularily when you are talking about HOMOS in Malawi. Thats just a NO NO! All i can say is that meet where ever you meet but keep yourselves in the closet. If i found you (igmm 2005) around any of my younger brothers talking that stuff , there is no knowing what i might do to you man. Njiba.
I remember in my secondary school days there was this common point for debate "has westernisation brought more harm than good" based on your facts this is one of the most drastic habit that you have copied from the west. I think you are trying to fight alosing battle.You say that people in malawi dont understand you guys/sissys whatever you wanna call yourself.The worst thing that can happen is having you as part of the society.You are trying to reverse the way of nature. If anybody follows your way the human race will become extinct. This is one way of getting rid of the entire human race. Igmm2005 if your parents were gay/lesbo you wouldnt be here.You owe your family the power to continue the family line.There is no crying on this forum.I personally have no remorse for your gay agendas.
You should stay in the closet coz thats where you belong.
The only way for reproduction to take place is by joint efforts between man and woman,how are you homos going to procreate?how will you fulfill Gods promise to Abraham.
Genesis 17verse2 and i will give my covenant between me and you that i may multiply you very very much. verse4 as for me,look! my covenant is with you and you will certainly become a father of a crowd of nations.

Let me borrow Robert Mugbe's words who said and i quote, "Homosexual and Lesbians are people whose status is below the pig. They should not be allowed in our society whatever the case is.It is a taboo in our society so should not be entertained in whatever way".i don't think i need to add anything everyone above has said it all.

If you think you have reached the top keep on climbing.
Looking at your entry, my first assumption is that you are not a typical/original Malawian, you either grew up in another country or you are simply a foreigner. For an original Malawian the mere thought of the subject homosexuality is taboo and this is almost unheard of amongst Malawians.
My request to you sir/madam is to take back your homosexuality back to wherever you came from and STOP polluting our warm Hart of Africa with your sickening and weird way having sex. Call me a conservative or closed minded but you are a sick person sir.
Even apart from what the Bible says, homosexuality must be termed extremely unhealthy.
Sexually transmitted diseases are without a doubt the most serious consequence of homosexual behavior. Practicing homosexuals as a group account for an overwhelmingly disproportionate number of cases of sexually transmitted diseases, including gonorrhea, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, and syphilis (Mireya Navarro, "Federal Officials See Sharp Rise of Hepatitis Among Gay Men," The New York Times, March 6, 1992). According to the American Medical Association, homosexual youth are twenty-three times more likely to contract sexually transmitted diseases than heterosexuals (American Adolescents: How Healthy Are They?, American Medical Association, 1990, p.31).
Lesbians are 19 times more likely than heterosexual women to have had syphilis, twice as likely to suffer from genital warts, and four times as likely to have scabies (New England Journal of Medicine 317:973,1987).
A recent study of Massachusetts teenagers, published in the American Journal of Public Health (Anne H. Faulkner and Kevin Cranston, "Correlates of Same-Sex Sexual Behavior in a Random Sample of Massachusetts High School Students," February 1998, p. 264) discovered that self-identified gays were:
nine times more likely to have reported using alcohol on a daily basis;
six times more likely to report having recently used cocaine than their heterosexual counterparts;
nineteen times more likely to report having used cocaine on ten or more occasions per month;
five times more likely to report having used other illegal drugs, including cocaine, twenty or more times in their lives;
nearly seven times more likely to report ever having injected an illegal drug;
fifty percent more likely than their heterosexual counterparts to have considered committing suicide.
The average homosexual of any age is three times more suicidal than the heterosexual (Cameron, Playfair, Wellum, The Homosexual Lifespan, Family Research Institute, Feb 14, 1992).
Life expectancy of homosexual men and women without AIDS is about 33 years shorter than that of the heterosexual (Cameron, Playfair, Wellum, The Homosexual Lifespan, Family Research Institute, Feb 14, 1992). Surprisingly, AIDS has only a modest effect on the average life expectancy of a homosexual male. The average age of men dying from AIDS is 39. The average age of homosexuals dying from all other causes is even more revealing: 41. Only one percent die of old age. In study after study, less than three percent of all homosexuals surveyed are over the age of 55.
Why is homosexuality such a dangerous lifestyle? Part of the reason is the promiscuous lifestyle of homosexuals. Homosexualities (1978, page 308) an official publication of The Institute for Sex Research founded by Alfred Kinsey, Alan Bell, and Martin Weinberg, reported that only ten percent of male homosexuals could be termed as "relatively monogamous" or "relatively less promiscuous" (defined as 10 or fewer lifetime partners). Additional findings showed that 60 percent of male homosexuals had more than 250 lifetime sexual partners, and 28 percent of male homosexuals had more than 1,000 lifetime sexual partners. Another startling fact is that 79 percent admitted that more than half of their sexual partners were strangers.
What Does the Bible Have to Say About Homosexuality?
Genesis 19:5-8 They called to Lot, "Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them." Lot went outside to meet them and shut the door behind him and said, "No, my friends. Don't do this wicked thing. Look, I have two daughters who have never slept with a man. Let me bring them out to you, and you can do what you like with them. But don't do anything to these men, for they have come under the protection of my roof." "Get out of our way," they replied. And they said, "This fellow came here as an alien, and now he wants to play the judge! We'll treat you worse than them." They kept bringing pressure on Lot and moved forward to break down the door.
Leviticus 18:22 Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable. [Read also verses 24-30.]
Leviticus 20:13 If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.
Deuteronomy 23:17 No Israelite man is to become a shrine prostitute. No Israelite woman is to become a shrine prostitute.
The "male shrine prostitute" was a homosexual. He is called a "dog" in verse 18, a nickname he received from the dog-like manner in which he debased himself with men.
Judges 19:21-23 So he took the man into his house and fed his donkeys. After they had washed their feet, they had something to eat and drink. While they were enjoying themselves, some of the wicked men of the city surrounded the house. Pounding on the door, they shouted to the old man who owned the house, "Bring out the man who came to your house so we can have sex with him." The owner of the house went outside and said to them, "No, my friends, don't be so vile. Since this man is my guest, don't do this disgraceful thing."
1 Kings 14:24 There were even male shrine prostitutes in the land; the people engaged in all the detestable practices of the nations the LORD had driven out before the Israelites. [See also 1 Kings 15:12; 22:46; 2 Kings 23:7; and Job 36:13-14.]
Romans 1:25-26 They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshipped and served created things rather than the Creator--who is forever praised. Amen. Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.
1 Corinthians 6:9-11 Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
"male prostitute" = malakos = literally softness, slang for a boy or man used in temple prostitution for homosexual activity. "homosexual offenders" = arsenokoites = one who lies on a couch with a male.
1 Timothy 1:9-10 We also know that law is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious; for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, for adulterers and perverts, for slave traders and liars and perjurers--and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine.
"perverts" = arsenokoites (same word as 1 Corinthians 6:9).
