For those not in the know Parliament yesterday rejected Bingu's appointment of Mary Nangwale as Inspector General of the Malawi Police force.
It's a move that's been long speculated considering the recent co-operation of those two unlikely bedfellows, the UDF and the MCP.
But let's look at this objectively: They've amply demonstrated to the President that they have enough of a majority to sway opinion in the house (she was voted out by a majority of just five votes). The point is, why should we as Malawians suffer while our elected parliamentarians play power games?
For crying out loud there are far more pressing issues to be addressed. The rains let us down again and because we are a nation with a large freshwater lake but no working irrigation system, there will be famine again this year. Prices for the average Malawian have spiralled into the realm of the ridiculous. Case in point, 1KG of Illovo sugar now costs MKw 75/= The Malawi Kwacha mid-rate (avg of buy and sell) is now 112.0579 against the US Dollar. We have a matter of weeks import cover remaining in our forex reserves and commerical banks have stopped issuing traveller's cheques.
Since the inception of Mary Nangwale as IG there has been a marked improvement in the performance of the police. Traffic is managed better, there are fewer unroadworthy vehicles and more patrols around the country. I'm not talking miracles here, but little changes that mean a lot.
Yet when parliament sits they choose to ignore the far more pressing issues and start playing Who's-The-Boss.
Sickening I tell you, Malawians who care nothing for the plight of their fellow citizens and would much rather achieve their own obscure and self-serving goals.
I often wonder. I have a good job, get a good salary and yet I'm still struggling to make ends meet, how much more my jobless brothers and sisters?
I can't stand the childishness of these men we elected into Government some times.
Well said. I havent been to Malawi all the time Nangwale has been IG, but the issues you have raised are not new. I heard, first hand, from people that our traffic police, who were one of the most corrupt lot in Malawi, were refusing bribes during Nangwale's time. Heard of the many patrols conducted around town every day and the sudden decline in crime rate in Malawi. Instead of looking at all this, our so called Parliament- these people who, by the way, are spending taxpayers' money, decide to say "No" to a person who had ably delivered what voters have always wanted. One wonders what calibre of person they are looking for to become IG. Could it be wrong if one said that possibly most of them are benefeciaries of the corrupt and decaying system? Otherwise, it doesnt make sense. This is demeaning to the Malawian voter. Are we really ready for DEMOCRACY or is it that we dont understand what it means?
this is the same thing I am talking about. I am not in Malawi and havent been in a long time. But it comes down to same thing. It seems like pple only look out for themselves as long as they have it all then all is good. We really need to be looking at the big picture as Malawians where do we want our country to be in the future will the rich keep getting richer and the poor keep getting poor? Talk is cheap we can all come online express our feeling but then what. What have you done to see that the future of Malawi is different from what it is now. These are the kinds of issues that need to be addressed among us Malawians that are on this forum lets make our country united and strong. Dreams only start with one person not the whole country. Let us also keep our country in serious prayers. God has been with us so far and he'll countinue to bless the country of Malawi
peace
