PRESIDENT CALLS IN THE GHOSTBUSTERS

The president of Malawi has moved out of his 300-room State mansion, claiming it is haunted. Bingu wa Mutharika has asked clergymen to pray to “exorcise evil spirits”.“No strategy designed from the pits of hell will prosper, “said the Rev Malani Mtonga, one of the presidents’ aides.“We have asked for divine intervention to cast the blood of Jesus against any evil plots against the president”. The 71 year-old leader apparently hears footsteps and strange noises in his suite in the dead of night. But no one else, not the first lady nor his bodyguards, hears anything. “Sometimes he feels rodents crawling all over his body but, when the lights are turned on, he sees nothing, “an aide said. Described as “obscene opulence” amid grinding poverty, the mansion took 20 years to build in one of Africa’s poorest countries. It was occupied by Malawi’s parliament until Mr. Mutharika came to power in the disputed May 2004 elections and took it for himself. The MPs have not met since last September because they have no venue. Civil Rights groups and opposition leaders have accused the president of reneging on his promise to trim state spending. Mr. Mutharika will live at another house until he feels safe to return.
