Heard Muthalika is about to launch the DPP party , is this going to be the beginning of the demise of UDF. What do you think UDF needs to do to prevent the mass exodus of very prominent members of the party to DPP. Do you think Muluzi's retirement altogether could save the party from further loss in popularity, as its been rumoured that he's been unilaterary firing big time members unnecessarily. Just wondering what are your views, on what's hapening politically in the Warm Heart of Africa.
Something I've noticed (quite markedly in Malawi) is that political loyalties shift very easily.
Being the young democracy we are, our politicians are yet to take actual ideological stances and stick with them through thick and thin. The current mass exodus and rallying of support to Bingu's GOVERNMENT is quite heart-warming but I've learnt to take such scenario's with a pinch of salt ever since I 'wasted' my vote like many others. We voted for candidates who dumped us wholesale to join the very party they'd been badmouthing all along simply because it was in Government.
I just hope that with the formation of this new party the focus will remain on Governing and the Nation of Malawi as opposed to petty partisan politics. We are too poor and underdeveloped a nation to be indulging ourselves in the luxury of battling out trivial party-based issues in parliament.
If truly Bingu can deliver on this paradigm shift then all I can say is: ZABWINOZILIKUNTSOGOLO. I hope and pray
I share the fears you have although I wish I was as optimistic as you have concluded. You see the way I look at it is that the former UDF plus a few faces from the original AFORD are coming together to form a new party that excludes Muluzi and Chihana. Much as the exclusion of Muluzi and Chihana is good news to most of us, I doubt there will be a significant change in the way things will be run. All the people charged with corruption cases are joining this new party. Talk of Salim Bagus, one Mr Msosa etc. Its also rumoured that Mr Humphrey Mvula is joining the new party after he openly criticised atcheya. What does this tell us? Are we likely to see the end of these corruption cases? God forbid, but I am no longer excited with whatever is going on back home. As Kamlepo once said " fisi ndi fisi, it does not matter which bush he resides in." The same old guards are back in the name of a new party. Do we expect any change?
On parties founded on principles, I think we still have a long way to go. With our poverty level, I am sure the one who butters your bread is always right. We all were made to dance to the tune of atcheya (when he had the wallet) and now I see the same. No principles involved as long as I will get something out of it. How sad!
Malawians need to pray hard so that Bingu as a leader remains focussed, otherwise with the amount of hero worshipping and fortune hunting going around, he can easily lose direction. That Paudah Paf is what I see. I share your sentiments but lack the optimism.
