Of Radio DJs, Bribery, Music producers and Pirates
Permalink Closed

Of late I have leant that as a musician in Malawi its hard to make it out there. They say you can not hear your music on air until you cough up something to the DJs. Are these part of the rules and regulations in the radio stations? It will make sense to me with the private owned Stations but not with government owned. They are supposed to promote anyone. And what do the directors do about this? Nada! Even though the artist takes the option of bribery, he still finds it difficult to make it out there. The producers will rip them of big time, with their 2%, 98% profit share. No wonder Chibade uses 3310 and has to catch a minibus to travel around! Its true that technology has its own disadvantages. Pirate is a major problem in the industry.  They say its crime, but the one which the police support! Some artists and in the same Mama Africa are driving Lamboghinis, H3s and Ferraris while our Top dog here drives Landikhuluza, this is a shame!biggrin

The problem with that type of corruption is it's extremely difficult to prove. I'm sure the directors of all the radio stations are very aware of the problem - the only problem is how to go about apprehending the guilty individuals.

The tendency is bad and unfair for the upcoming artists since not all of them can afford to cough up for airplays. Something has to be done.

Yes you are quite right Abu, that's why i said kubwezera chitukuko mmbuyo. In the sense that the best artist are out there blocked from airing their songs because they cant afford. You will find that the ones who atleast afford to bribe, their songs is not the best at all. We are happy, we listen to them on our radio stations, not knowing that there are best artists out there their songs we will never hear!! It's sad!furious

Thats Malawi for us! i you are stingy and you are in that kind of business forget about making it big in the industry. unless, you cough up something then all the radio stations will be playing your muzic and in the process all the fans will be yours. But then thats the meaning and the beauty of being a Malwian - mumafuna kuti DJ akakudyereni kuti?

then its tough to be in this game, It could have made a lot of sense if these DJs were doing voluntary work, I mean these guys get paid big time, and they still have the audacity to rip of other poor fellows out there. You go out in the streets you find flyers and posters which says timabena ma CD pa ntengo ozizira pano! These producers also, they scout some talent and tell these poor fellows to sign that chopeza chawo chikhala kutchukako. This is hilarious.

Abu,
They get paid big time? in Malawi?? i doubt it! The peanuts they get is the driving force behind the rampant bribery within the proffession.

The truth is, I dont how much they get paid. People of the same calibre are amongst the highly paid in some other countries.

Gentlemen DJ get peanuts and its only fame that they benefit otherwise nothing meanful in this business. I have seen a number of them quitting and pursuing other professions enmasses.
The same is applying to journalist. They want to be given something inorder to cover your stories in their paper especially if you are a politician. So its everywhere be it road traffic commission ,Police ,Hospital just to name a few.

the last time i heard of strike in malawi it was ineffectual.and i still believe it isnt.the thing is our artist havent yet developed a sound genre that is attractive to listeners of wider margin, the artists fan bases are not operational in our malawi. the live shows are  so expensive that only few can afford them, our marketing machine is so weak so much that some of us believe is nonexistent, we dont have competition of recording companies and production outfits...etc. these factor leaves our musicians vulnerable to exploitation. the trend will continue until the artists learn to stand for themselves. now are they capable of that apart from the chosen few? the answer to me looks nada! therefore anyeme basi.

even in the west these dj recieve freebies now and then.
