Malawi Football

For Malawi football to reach the standard of the 70s and 80s, football authorities in Malawi and the government need to work together to draw up a national strategy but only after they work out where they are going wrong now.

For me it is clear that there is no proper investment in football, especially in schools,  like there was two decades ago. I remember my primary school had three teams that used to compete in the Mayors trophy. Under 12s, Under 15s and under 17s. (Yes, we had 17 year olds at primary school. These were the days when people would be in Std 8 for years).

When I went to secondary school, we had an in house competition and I remember that football club officials used to come to spot talent. Then there were the prestigious Malawi Book Services and Cocacola trophies.

We can retain lost glory if the government and the football authorities challenge the private sector to sponsor similar tournaments.

Its not about the government the players have no will to win big and achieve something for their own good, its always what can the govt do, what about the companies. Hell no these people do not have an obligation to sponsor one event that is full of hooligans chamba smoking teenagers.

The onus has to start with the kids and their parents going all the way to teachers or sports master if you like. If my memory serves me right it was individual effort of sports masters who wanted the best of their school to excel it had nothing to do with govt or companies.

If you envy the 70 and 80 soccer, what do you think they were earning back then? It wasn't the responsibility of FAM, these guys had the passion for soccer and they were utmost fending for themselves the returns were that they were getting exposed and having jobs (the clever ones) and those waiting for FAM to sort them out, search me where they are now.

Oh yes it had everything to do with govt. The Ministries of Education and Sports/Culture played a big role so did companies like Cocacola, Malawi Book Services. Football clubs also played a big role (and it is really their sponsors who did eg the Berec people, MITCO etc) I remember they used to provide transport and the kit to schools.

For the chamba you allude to, it was there that time as well but I agree youngsters were more disciplined then than now. More occupied then perhaps?

Lastly in my original posting private sector meant companies.

I agree that player attitude is a big factor but this is something that the football authorities, clubs etc can deal with.

If youre talking about discipline back then everyone used to behave..dont forget it was one party system...if youre not disciplined...mudzi wonse wakwanu will go to jail
Do you remember what The late Clifton Clington Msiya said at HHi during Malawi national team training  he was tired of being desciplined ndi a Mwachande and he was like "A MWACHANDE ZIMENEZI TIZASIYA NAZO MPIRA" and this statement was all over the country  WHY coz back thenn it was one party system you know what i mean and now with democracy players they express themselves....MA PLAYER AKALE ANKAWOPA but that doesnt mean that they were all that matured enough......for your information iwas one of them....HA...HA.HA  ....BUT all in all i do agree with you TJ...back then lot of clubs as you said like Mitco, hadware,Berec were much more involved with their clubs and the youths....Now its like the government is more focussing on hiring foreign coaches...each and every tournament theres a new coach...now they say its CONSTANTINE....what happened 1988 it was a malawian coach Malola why cant they try Local coaches??Wheres is Mathews mwenda[idont know anything about his wherebouts where is he?]what about Ernest 'BARBED WIRE 'mtawali???

The exceptional footy talents ,integrity and qualities of the 70s and 80s witnessed in this country do not come about every other year, but, but , there are plenty of good quality players who can emerge ,improve and retain our lost glory if only given a chance and nurtured.
I feel its not about those Mayors Trophy (**** that...in Nkhamenya we dont have a mayor ...hence highly discriminated against) , Limbe Leaf Trophy, or MBS Trophy...We just have a lot of work to do for sure, still, our starting position its never about the money........no.......not at all .......a footy culture!we Malawians just aint footy fanatics......and we pretend 2much that we have footy closer to our hearts.

For athletes its not what they do in the 2 hrs that they are in practice/playing,  its about the 22hrs, I believe the football system should be averhauled in order to attract sponsors, not the other way around. You should remeber that these corporations are in business to make money and opt to associate with exceptional performance. This is not a charity, its a mutual relationship.

No! get it right what part did the govt play in soccer circles? As for companies its not like they do it out of charity there have to be returns, back then MBS was we can say a sole supplier of school materials and by sponsoring the trophy it was giving back what they owed to the children. Now the rot is in us by buying from Indians who give us kickbacks and it all ends with us, inturn we want to blame the companies for lack of sponsorship no they dont have the money, look at golf they talk business and make business right there hence the continued golf tourneys.

I was once in school and had a great school team at Lilongwe Boys i would bet my life that if our sports master knew of a chamba smoker in the team let alone in the school he was dismissed and no stories about that (Ask Ngwazi) and on top of that we produced some of the countries finest footballers who the country was proud of in the years of early 90's.
More occupied thenconfused Not nowconfused

I agree that player attitude is a big factor but this is something that the football authorities, clubs etc can deal with.

How can they deal with a players attitude when they dont have academies proper structures and the club officials are nothing but a bunch of userpers waiting for a pot of gold.

All in all am saying Malawi soccer had a ray of light at the end of the tunnel but now its gone. I will still insist its in the players.

It seems that you are choosing to disagree with me yet your arguments seem to be with me all the way.

My original posting was about football authorities in Malawi coming together to stratigise on how to improve the quality of football in Malawi.

What ray of light at the end of the tunnel was there for Malawi football that is not there now. If you ask me the ray just got brighter. If you follow football you know that most top football clubs in the world now have got African signings. Is this a light too dim for our chamba smoking football players as you label them.

Not all players use chamba. Those that smoke surely have other reasons other than football not paying well. If the football authorities were interested they would weed out those that smoke chamba from the national squad.

Please also note that my earlier posting was merely comparing the past and present. You are right clubs don't have academies but in the past they had youth teams. I remember notable players were promoted from these youth teams to the first eleven. Is this the case now?

What i don't agree with you is that companies have an obligation to strategise on the betterment of soccer. If u ask me i know pretty well about these soccer issues for ur info watch out the coca cola schools trophy might go as well, chifukwa mukumwa kwambiri malambe juice.

Sport in Malawi, si bola walandila allowance. Ma allowancewotu ndiye akututidwa. Imagine kuti anthu alandila ma allowance angati mmene senegal ili kwathu kuno, Umbava wachuluka kwathu kuno.
