The D.D. Phiri Column

About MCP, referendum and Zimbabwe

Nearly 50 years have passed since the major events that led to the independence of this country took place. Most of those men and women who were at the centre of the events have either died or live in retirement and are silent.
The few that still grace political platforms usually address people much younger than themselves. These politicians wittingly or unwittingly sometimes recall or rewrite the history to achieve person goals.
A case in point is about the origins of the Malawi Congress Party (Party), the party that some people think is mostly for the people of the Central Region of Malawi. Actually, this once mighty political organisation did not start there, neither was it started by anyone from there.
I was in Dar-es-Salaam in 1959 when apart from being a civil servant I was a member of an organisation called Nyasaland Brotherhood Society (NBS) whose president was Joseph M. Mseka of Likoma Island. In many ways NBS had been acting as an agent of the Nyasaland African Congress (NAC) while feigning to be a mere friendly society.
After learning that the Governor had eased some of the restrictive emergency ordinances the NBS decided to send one of its members to come here and investigate if conditions were ripe for forming a new political party to take over the work of the banned NAC.
The man we sent was Mpokonyoka Nyirenda whose home district was Karonga. He was here for about a month. He then returned in October or November. He told us that a new political grouping had already been started by Malawis only lawyer then Orton Edgar Chirwa who was being assisted by a youth called Aleke Banda. We then decided that there was no need for starting a rival political party.
Shortly thereafter, two young men arrived in Dar-es-Salaam. One was called B.E. Nyirenda and another was C. Thole. They told us that the MCP was growing fast, thanks to its administrator and secretary Aleke. Chirwa was usually busy with court casesdefending those freedom fighters.
Aleke put his heart into the job as no one of his age had done before. In December 1959 he started a mouthpiece of the MCP called Malawi News. That was the beginning of the Malawi News that everybody knows today.
Right from the start the MCP was founded it vigorously appealed for Dr Hastings Kamuzu Bandas release. As a result, those who had been suspicious of it now came in droves to join. On April 1, 1960 Kamuzu was released from Gweru and brought to Malawi.
A few days later Chirwa handed over the office of president to him. In September 1960 Dunduzu Chisiza was released from Kanjedza, Aleke handed over to him the office of secretary-general.
Kamuzu did not take part in forming the MCP but because of his charisma and prestige he turned it into a mass movement.
Those NGOs spokes persons who have called for a referendum on the Constitution are talking serious business. They are not joking. As the wind of change was blowing over Africa demanding an end to one-party dictatorship in the early 1990s at annual conventions of the MCP resolutions were being passed rejecting multiparty politics.
If the question whether to have plural parties had been left to Parliament to decide perhaps up to this day Malawi would have been under one-party dictatorship.
Many republican constitutions provide for a referendum to decide certain issues because they know that parliamentarians cannot always be trusted to put the interest of their nation before their personal or party interests.
Whoever says that all the time our MPs delay or defeat budgets, make threats about impeachment, they are reflecting the general will of the nation is being economical with the truth.
Conducting a referendum on the whole Constitution, however, would not be easy and might confuse the voters. Some matters are too technical even for parliamentarians. We may select one or two key topics on which to ask the whole nation to vote.
I would suggest there should be a referendum on the death penalty. Most people have clear attitudes towards those who kill others. On the national language, the referendum should not be on whether Chichewa be declared a national language. Even when the language was being called chiNyanja all those who knew that there was a country called Nyasaland also knew that its common language was chiNyanja.
But in the referendum people could be asked what the national language be called? chiNyanja, Chichewa of chiMalawi. I do not know how many people were consulted when changing the name from chiNyanja to Chichewa.

Its very unfair to blame Tembo,we have to accept that people come and go in positions of influence and power and especially in politics, durability is very rare.Tembo might not have held a position of influence and power like Aleke but one thing that is undisputable is that he was there when everything was happening.John Tembo joined politics long before he went to Rhodes university and became finance secretary after the death of Dunduzu Chisiza in 1962 and also became a member of the then Legislative council in 1963.He has outlived and outmanouvered all those pretenders, survived persecution under the UDF and today he is at the helm of the strongest party in Malawi with a real chance of becoming our next President if the wrangles between Muluzi and Mutharika continue,he will definitely be the beneficiary of that fight.weirdface

By the way,John Tembo is not a chewa,he is a ngoni from Dedza.weirdface

The first time, if i may recall in 1994, it was Gwanda as Presidential candidate of MCP with John Tembo as the running mate and in 1999 it was Gwanda Chakwamba again (forgotten who was the running mate, possibly he had Chihana) - remember JZU campaining for people to vote for MCP MP's while couldnt give direction to MCP supporters as who to vote for as a presidential candidate?
Then came 2004, it was JZU himself as Presidential candidate with Peter Chiona as the running mate. and you know what was achieved? he took MCP to the point where it has failed since the coming in of multiparty! it has the highest members of MP's in the house and if consideration is applied of possible rigging of the elections by the UDF (as confirmed by late Dumbo Lemani) then John Tembo would have taken MCP into Government the very first time he has been its Presidential candidate. So there is no question of JZU taking the part as a personal property and as pointed out by the forums Ngwazi Its very unfair to blame Tembo,we have to accept that people come and go in positions of influence and power and especially in politics, durability is very rare.

A very, very interesting topic to Amikhe! As issues stand, Bingo was never meant to be at the helm, the elections were rigged. You can tell by the number of  MP's MCP has in the legislature. Amikhe dislikes repeating himself but I will say it again, majority rules. If we had a majority of MP's  on the governments side, we would never be going through these incidents whereby the budget is being rejected ajnd so fourth.

As to propriatorship of MCP, I have never heard bwana Tembo saying the party belongs to him. No. We must appreciate that to run a party is no joke especially if you are the strongest party in the nation. You get people who are there just to mess up matters and you have to stand up against them or the whole process will eventualy drown.

Long live JZU!

That my friend is underestimating the powers that John Tembo wields and his durability as a politician and doing so is a sure sign that you are not or dont follow Malawi politics very well.I can agree with you that JZU is not the President now but as others have rightly pointed out,the UDF through late Dumbo Lemani(of all the people!)accepted that they rigged the last election, they stole the votes from JZU and gave them to Bingu,Dumbo stated that over 350 thousand votes were "transferred" in this way and that despite all the horror stories we here about the man.weirdface

He is the only party leader in the country to have associated with Muluzi to the point of voting for Muluzis third term bid but managed to keep his grip on both his party and his base. The late Chihana not only lost his support in the north and won only 6 seats in what was originally his home turf but lost his party as well since the Dindi Gowa Nyasulus, khwaulis and the Shawas started challenging him after his support for Muluzis third term. But for Tembo, the support he gave Muluzi brought with it monetary gains that he used wisely to consolidate his position in the party as well as the Central region by giving enough support to all those aspiring MPs that stood on MCP ticket, find out how a veteran like Ntaba lost Lilongwe South East to a little unknown Willard Gwengwe.weirdface

Again we have to thank JZU for making sure that Muluzis bid for third term failed because he instructed Kate Kainja and three otherMCP MPs not to turn up on the day of the voting as he knew that Bakili could not win without all the MCP MPs voting for him and that is why Bakili lost the voting by a mere three votes,he needed 128 votes but got only 125 and Bakili was very furious with John Tembo for not delivering yet he had walked away with close to MK65million,now there is a politician!.weirdface

At the moment, the Central region is strongly behind JZU and he is gonna retain all the seats in this region. The South is divided and so is the North.Bingu and Muluzi will share the spoils in the South with no clear majority and definitely JZU will scavenge the remaining votes, the north will vote mainly depending on who gets Goodall Gondwe,if Bingu does not make Goodall Gondwe his running mate then he will lose the northern vote but if he does make his VP then he is assured of the vote. However approaches have been made from the MCP camp to GG to consider becoming JZU running mate if Bingu does not make him one and if,I am saying if,GG crosses to MCP then its game over for both Bingu and Muluzi.weirdface

So there you are my friend Dada, you can never rule out the man,you underestimate Tembo at your own peril.weirdface

Kamuzu Banda himself didnt see good leadership in Tembo thats why he left it in Gwanda's hands.

I know you might have read what Ntaba said but you can be assured that this is a wrong impression created by a frustrated person called Herthewick.weirdface

The truth of the matter is that when the MCP by then led by Kamuzu realised that they could not win any votes in the Southern region in the 1994 P&PE without a hard hitter,a heavyweight who could bring the Southern vote. Two people were approached,Brown Mpinganjira and the just released Gwanda Chakuamba.Gwanda had hoped that when he came out of prison, joined and donated over MK10000 to the UDF,the UDF people would give him a senior party position befitting a man of his stature. When this did not materialise and the MCP approached him after BJ had rebuffed their approaches,he tied his return to the party with certain conditions and the main one being that he should only be second to Kamuzu in the party hierarchy as well as in government. This did not seem a hard thing for a seasoned politician like JZU to accept because he wanted the party to do well in the elections and he never objected to these conditions and surely MCP though it lost the 1994 elections got all the 9 seats in Nsanje and 3 in Chikwawa because of this reasoning.weirdface

Now,because Gwanda had become number two in the party,it was obvious that when Kamuzu died and in the absence of a convention,he takes over and at the following two conventions Gwanda won the presidency but JZU as determined as ever never gave up and today look where he is,now there my friend we have a politician and not what Ntaba is claiming.Actually instead of talking about Tembo,Ntaba should explain the missing aids monies!weirdface
