I had been under the impression that the pressure on young ladies to be very thin does not apply to Malawian (generally African) ladies. But recently I was told that one of my teen-age cousins is starving herself to lose weight because she thinks she is not pretty enough if she remains well built. Actually she is not fat but she thinks she needs a body like model's.
Is this pressure common to many Malawian young women. Is being thin attractive to you guys. Or is this just another example of the influence of "Hollywood" on the modern world. I am worried that tikutengela zinthu zilizonse, even the useless ones. Personally I don't want my woman to be stick thin.
Its called anorexia its just a fanciful way of expressing themselves did you not hear about the twins (girls) from either US or UK who were so much into this anorexic thing to the extent that one died.

I thought this topic must have cleared some time ago like so many others but it makes me wonder, even Bingiza has opted to say something about it. Well, I can ever claim to know lots about sizes of womens bodies as I spend less and less time besides them, however, I am told that one is size zero (which is size 4 in the UK) and the other is a size 18. Adilo, try to understand your kid cousin, any woman serious about modelling and stuff , they have to lose weight including our Miss Malawis because thats the way the world has accepted this career to be . I mean its all about fashion photography, not so? And these skinny women get alot more work in adverts compared to our funny shaped Miss Malawis and are awarded some sort of a huge amount of catalogue opportunities. Its a career at a cost where you have to punish yourself that much to suceed. We have to accept the fact that these women job involves people looking at them all day and their bosses(promoters) feel good seeing them being appreciated that way by men and modelling society. If your cousin is serious into modelling then I dont have no problem with her abnormal appetite for food. My advice for her is that she must try and fall in love with some bit of snorting. Everyone maintains their looks by having a few lines now and again , let her get in touch with cocaine Kate Moss, she will make it.
But I think Malawian men are quite desirable and I am. I like a woman with great boobs and that nice bum, oh yeah, its heavenly. I dont like to have any inhibitions when it comes to the bedroom with my woman. I mean lets face it , you dont have to be slim to be sexy. They talk of Victoria Beckham having a waist (chiwuno) of a 7 yr old girl. Do I fancy that honestly? Could you guys surely imagine her and be content, satisfied, ludzu ndi kutha? Yes , she is posh , and everything and some of you might say it feels sexy and womanly because she is always attracting admiring glances but lets be honest. Truth, what is true in her when she has her legs opened with that body? Proportionality.....Women are meant to be a certain way, and i think its terrible if our own young girls force themselves to be something they are not.

Eetchef , you are right thats the reason why Miss Malawi has never reached semis even the finals of Miss World. Chithupi mbwe, ma curve paliponse. For that career it can't work but as a housewife yep mwadolola, mwalasa, wandiii is the best.

There are two debates.. one we are eating more and becoming an obese society and at risk of medical problems... the world is waiting for its obesity epidemic...
The second is this size zero problem... The answer begins at home I think with education, and interpersonal motivation....
The trouble is, as humans with emotions we become sensitive to the fact that someone may point out we are too fat or thin... we take exception to other peoples comments, in many cases understandibly.
Old fashioned honesty is replaced is touchy, feely sugar coated anthologies which do little to deter an individiuals habits.
I often question myself, thats as a society are we really advancing or just losing the bigger picture and becoming mroe indiviualised and less tolerant and as a result we are probably going to face bigger problems in the future.

Does this mean ladies cant contribute to this topic? I feel it's only fair to hear what the ladies have to say about these size 'zero' bodies since the discussion is about the female anatomy and its composition or lack of it!!!!
Osati phat like most of chilawedzi women i see around me. Mkazi aziziyang'anira with that coca-cola shape and akamayenda ngati akufloata! Serena ndi nyatwa koma panonso alipo oposa amane aja. Oti ukawaona nkumayamika kuti chauta anafatsapo polenga. Osati timitengo timene azungu amafunati. Ukamadya uzidziwa kuti supanidwa ndi fupayi madala!
This is also no doubt as a reuslt of globalisation, acess to Nike shoes are not the only results of globalisation, with it comes TV and the subliminal messages passed on in songs, movies, and tv shows.... the pressure to look white, and the pressure to look like a model.. a ugandan model collaped in Ny just last year b/c of these pressures. woemn of color are least likel to have body image problems in the US , but somebody really shold really guide the youg females o believe that black is beautiful, and weight is beautiful (not obesity) , so that they can be happy with themselves...as we aspire to 'fit in ' to the global economy we become prey to the same influebnces as females in the west and advertising... we need to distiguish that thats TV and we are who we are..

YTP, don't worry about these guys. They do not have perfect bodies themselves, yet they want to date supermodels or Amikhe's Chakuti Ndii. Ena akuti Serena Williams, JLo, Beyonce.
