Deserving pupils to go to Kamuzu Academy

by George Ntonya, 28 November 2005 - 07:11:50

Needy but intelligent pupils from all the districts in the country will soon have an opportunity to pursue better and free education at Kamuzu Academy in Kasungu, headmaster Francis Cooke has disclosed.
Cooke said in an exclusive interview at the school on Monday that discussions with the Ministry of Education were at an advanced stage for the government to reintroduce bursaries for selected pupils to study at the “Eton of Africa”.
“I’ll be going to see her (Education minister Kate Kainja-Kaluluma) again probably on Wednesday,” Cooke said adding that when the negotiations are through each district will send a boy and girl to start Form One at the school in the next academic calendar.
The government, he said, will pay for their fees as was the case when founder of the school Kamuzu Banda was ruling the country. During Kamuzu Banda’s rule each district sent two boys and a girl to the school under government sponsorship.
The government abolished the bursaries in 1994 when Bakili Muluzi took over from Kamuzu Banda, forcing the school’s board of trustees to introduce commercial fees thereby turning the institution into an elitist school.
The Minister of Education was not available for comment as her mobile phone went unanswered and her secretary reported her out of the office for a meeting.
Kamuzu Academy opened in 1981 and uses the British syllabus.

Whoever wrote this story certainly hasn't visited any british school lately. To say that KA uses the "british" syllabus is absurd. British schools are no way near KA in terms of that. Only a handful of elitist schools in the UK even teach latin.

I mean if he had went to any, and I mean ANY school here he'll know what I'm talking about.

Quoting Abre, "I mean if he had went to any, and I mean ANY school here he'll know what I'm talking about."

Are you serious? If he had went to any ????    What language is this. It sure is not the Queens language and neither is it American English. This is pure criminal. And you call yourself an intellectual. What an intellectual we have amongst ourselves.

Men cant you be civil with one another.  I wonder what the wise man said about a woman who hates men.

This is about children coming from disadvantaged families, being given a very rare opportunity to study at the best school in Malawi.  This will motivate primary pupils to study and work hard to get a place in the academy.  The chances are like wining the lotto but it is good for motivation.

There is a difference between being smart and being intellectual, Just as there is btw being smart and wise. Thei journalist is not an intleectual but this doesn tno mean he is not smart.

On another note... But his journalistic skills do fail me when he writes

"The government abolished the bursaries in 1994 when Bakili Muluzi took over from Kamuzu Banda, forcing the school’s board of trustees to introduce commercial fees thereby turning the institution into an elitist school.
The Minister of Education was not available for comment as her mobile phone went unanswered and her secretary reported her out of the office for a meeting."

What business is that of our unless the Minister is evading the journalist for asking him to comment about some educational fraud scandal and he is trying to show that the Minister is purposefully avaiding him... this was a poor choice of sentence. Also where is the source of this article ..in fact ill bring up the source thing in a new topic b/c it does bother me...

I may not have as much knowledge about the british secondary school syllabus, but I do know for a fact that an IGCSE certificate is valid enough documentation for admission to most of the universities in the UK. And that Latin is compulsory untill form four, repectively before a pupil recieves their candidate number. The school shares a relationship with Cambridge university, such that papers be set and marked by the cambridge examiners themselves. So if the syllabus is not the same, then it sure is close.

Its a good move, but I think the ministry of education are best off tackling the problems accounting for the many short comings in our post-secondary education.

Maybe 50 years ago but now....

It might be the same as other elitist schools here like Eton or Harrow, but not any other. Going through my younger brother's syllabus and it's not even close. The fact that you said that it is validated by Cambridge says for a fact how elitist it is.

panther.

that was a dense, complex and brilliant critique, people must differentiate being intellectual and smart, there are people who are as wise as an old owl on this forum and some who are just intelligent and a handfull who are just smart,Ayatollah is smart and when you are smart you can also be dumb or dumber,he has good writing skills but can not coordinate stories and make them sensible for readers who are slow at grasping the contents.

everyone screws up the queens language thats why at oxford they compiled the dictionary for the simplicity of it all.he swears alot in his texts which often leads to misapplication and meaningless stanzas.but people ignore his cock ups because nobody is perfect.

Well can someone please define intelligence to me . Now that's gonna  be  interesting  , cos this morden times , intelligence is often defined by what certain beings called "experts" have decided is intelligent. If you know these things, you are considered "intelligent".

I would relly like your views on intelligent my question is can it  be measured or determined?

Game would you say that Intelligence isn't subjective, but it's irrelevant?

whats your take ??

a mathematician is intelligent (has a lot of data in her head & can apply)

a mathmaticians mathematician is smart (has a lot of data in her head )

a person that has lived thru math experiences and can apply them to everyday life ans make them relevant to us is wise.

Intelligence though is tricky, b/c colloquially the word has changed particulary now. It can mean simply, someone that has the knowledge, data ..thats the way that they typically use it, particulary post sept 11, its used as a noun - I have intelligigence, as opposed to the verb - adjective, the person is intelligent. when u use it in the verb sense it doesnt exactly mean the same thing...

People on this forum need not write perfect English to the nth degree b/c its understood online, that you dont need to , sometimes u just need to get the gist of the argument to determine if people fall under any of these categories...lets face it...why do we make English the measure of intelligence... the is really neo-colonialism . so what if someones English is not 100% correct, are we British ? I mean if someone wants to say 'leally instead of really from Malawi, so what , its not really our mother tongue (though a national lang.) & most Malawians speak multiple languages...which takes far more intelligence (data storage) then learning on language..

I see...so would you be happier if the author wrote that KA uses the british "elitist" syllabus?

Compulsory Latin? Across the board? You're sure? Just curious, it just seems like an odd choice for a core subject. I know it is (or was a few years ago) compulsory at K.A for the lower level students, but I thought that policy was peculiar to the school.

Well it does. No school here in the UK teaches Latin. The kids here wouldn't even know what Latin means. They spend their time downloading ringtones for their phones for chrissakes!

Panther So, the kid who can't write an essay, but could explain a complex philoshical theory is actually smarter than the kid who can get an A but doesn't have an orriganal thought in there head. ???
